Write a memo that says "effective (date), I resign my position with (company name). I appreciate the opportunities that have been given to me here. Then hand the note to your boss or leave it on his or her desk.

Resigning is never an easy task. However, this is what I did when the time came. First, I wrote a nice, honest letter outlining the highlights of my time at the firm. I was then honest about my future plans.

I then invited my boss to lunch -- someplace I knew he liked. Near the end of the meal I told him that there was obviously a reason I invited him to lunch.

I then handed him the envelope with the resignation letter and gave him a summary of it.

That was 4 years ago and we still communicate today.

Hope all goes well for you!
