I want to know the quickest possible route to Canberra from Melbourne and how long it takes. I have heard only 5 hours since construction of the Albury bypass. Any ideas?

Whereis says 7 hours, which seems about right.

Vinny - mapquest.com does not do Australia.

Usually takes about 8 hours pretty much non-stop. Even with Albury by-pass, I doubted it can save you 3 hours.

Driven from Canberra to Melbourne - several years ago , perhaps, but the distance won't have changed that much.

along the Hume highway is the quickest, it should take about 7 to 9 hours depending how often/long you stop for and where abouts in Melbourne you travel to/from, the Albury bypass doesn't save you that much time, its about 3 1/2 to 4 hours from Albury to Canberra.

You will do it comfortably in eight hours even in heavy traffic. If there is little traffic, you would be closer to seven hours. Do not even think about exceeding the speed limit by even a smidgen in Victoria. NSW allows up to 10% but Victorian police will book you at 113 in a 110 zone.
