I have a string of lantern lights (essentially christmas lights) and to turn them off, they must be unplugged. I am looking for some kind of on/off switch that will allow me to turn them off without unplugging them. I run other appliances through this separate ports on the extension cord so it is essential that this device only turn off the lights. Where can I find such an item? Does it even exist?

Cheapest solution
A power strip with an off/on switch. Just plug it into your existing extension cord. (Be sure you do not overload your extension cord.)

Next Cheapest:
A wireless rf remote for controlling lamps. See first link.

Fancy solution:
A X-10 type remote with a utility module. See third link.

water skipper is correct. There are power strips that you can buy. Some come with 4,6,8, or more outlets (where you plug the cord in) and im sure you could probably find smaller ones.
Or install a light switch near where you want it with a outlet and a disconnectable cord (PLUG)
Extension cords should only be used for temporary purposes. Not long term. It sounds like you could use an electrician. Wiring a circuit from the breaker box is actually pretty easy and a lot safer than using an extension cord for a lot of stuff.

You would need to install a switch, then run the hot wires from the switch to the outlet that you wish to turn off and on. When the switch is off, there wouldn't be any power running to the outlet so the lights would be out.

There are "inline" switches which you could use. You'd need to cut the "hot" wire and install the switch. It's pretty simple to do. The switch uses a wheel which is turned to open and close the circuit.

There are power strips you can turn on and off. You could buy a power strip just for the lights. Also, don't you remember the "Clap on! Clap off! The clapper!" commercials?
