First you have to be in the Army (or other branch) in a specialty from which snipers are drawn. You have to show an aptitude for all the required sniper skills, not just a strong desire to sneak around and shoot things. And of course they have to need you in that position.

Most of the other postings are right on. It is almost impossible to go directly in as a "sniper." You need to choose an MOS first of all that supports this role. Second, as the others have noted, you better be damn good with your marksmanship. Although the 11B MOS may get you there, the best chance would be to go Special Forces from the start (Possibly 18B - Weapons Seargent). You would need to check with the recruiter on acceptance because the rules change all the time. Sometimes, they will let new enlistees choose this career (with high test scores of course) but other times, it is only open to E4 and above already in the Army. If the option is available, one of your first stops would be Basic Airborne School. The beginning step is to go through SFAS (Special Forces Assessment and Selection Course). This is one of the most intense 5-week assessments offered by the U.S. Army and is solely intended to weed out the weak guys. However, to make it through is a very tall order. IF and I say, IF you make it through SFAS, you go into SFQC (Special Forces Qualification Course). Once you complete this, you are well on your way. To be honest, if you finish strong during your training to become "SF", you have a whole list of schools at your disposal: Scuba, Standard Airborne school is required but afterwards - HALO (High Altitude Low Opening), HAHO (High Altitude High Opening), etc., etc., etc. and yes "SNIPER" school if your marksmanship is good (and your attitude). I was a tabbed SF guy and did attend the school. One thing you should know though......."SNIPER" activities are not what the movies portray them as. 70-90% of sniper activites ARE NOT going out and taking down the bad guy with "one shot - one kill." Most of the activities are taking out communication, disabling vehicles, basically isolating the enemy for bigger things to come from the conventional units. This may also require you sitting in a hot field in a full guille suit having to drink and "hit the latrine" in the same spot. Movement gets you killed so paint your own picture on this one. Hopefully my advice is helpful. Don't be fooled though, this is a hard road to conquer. But if you do make it, you are one of the most elite soldiers the world has to offer - "De Opresso Liber"

It's an Army school that the other services can attend as well. Your best chance would be to go 11B (Infantry) and try to get a guaranteed duty station or assignment with a high-speed unit. Ask around. Find a recruiter who is 11B himself and spent a good amount of time on active duty. You'll need to talk to an 11B recruiter because they'll know what they are talking about on this, and most likely served in units that had Recon, Scout, or other specialties that attended Sniper school. You will need to become a stud as far as PT is concerned, and being good in math will be very beneficial in the course. It's not just about breathing and trigger control, there are a lot of on-the-fly mathematical calculations that you will need to do.

Sarg the Navy uses Snipers to as well as the SEALs and there is a whole lot to being a Sniper then just wanting to be one you have to prove you can shoot in the top 5 percent that you have the right mental state to pull the trigger and the ability to get in to place to take the shot

Marines and Army use snipers. Army snipers are usually 11b (infantryman) who show great aptitude at shooting and are sent to sniper school. While I am sure you can get the school in an enlistment contract like any other school, I have never heard of it being done. Ive been through the course, and it is VERY, VERY difficult to complete.

Talk to a recruiter. When you sign up you list your choices of what you want to do. I'm sure not many people sign up to be a sniper although my cousin did and is one. Visit the Army recruiting center.

Ask to be one. If you are infantry, ask to go to sniper training. Keep trying until you get what you want. So you better be the best at what you do to even get looked at.

...The Army has a "sniper" training school... it's very very intense and the background investigations "they" do on you might change your mine...less of course you're "squeaky clean"... If you truly want to be a "bad azz"... talk to the Navy recruiter about the S.E.A.L.S.
