My son is 5 and very bright. He was speaking very early and is reading way ahead of schedule. His pronunciation of certain letters, especially "R," has been a little funny and he seems to speak rather slowly, but I figured these things would improve with time.

Anyway, he's a bit of a klutz, always tripping over nothing and falling off the kitchen stools. He tries to ham it up, usually by going into a dramatic roll. Today, though, we were walking home from school and stopped to look at something and By God, he stepped off the curb with a speeding semi coming. I grabbed him by the collar to pull him back as the truck honked and sped by.

He claims he fell. I thought he just wasn't paying attention. But all these things are starting to make me wonder if maybe he's got equilibrium issues and that maybe it's affected his ears. How do I test for this?

Any suggestions are appreciated, thanks!

Some bright gifted children have what's called asynchronous development. Meaning they may have an intelligence that is above the average child their age, but their motor skills are not that of a child their age. If that is the case, he will catch up. Not all kids develop at the same pace, he may be ahead in some areas and behind in others.
I have a very bright 4 year old (can read, do simple add. and sub.) but he cant climb and run as well as other kids.

My niece is just like that!
She's 16 years old, she's the second in her class, honor society, and is the most amazing athlete I have ever seen live. She's training for the Olympics in soccer and excels at every sport she tries, even figure skating (which takes tons of balance). BUT, she can't seem to keep herself on a chair. She'll trip over any little thing and I've actually seen her tip over from just standing still. She was like this since she was a toddler.
It seems like if she's in fast motion, she's fine, but slow her down or stop her and she's super clumsy.
Maybe it's nothing. But, I guess it's worth a check with an Ear nose and throat doc.

have you checked the wear pattern on his shoes? If he has more wear on the insides it could be a balance issue. My son had this problem and we had to get him braces to straighten out his feet. You could take him to an ENT(ear nose and throat specialist) and they can usually do a hearing test right in their office.
Good Luck!

check his hearing..it sound funny, but his equillibrium(SP) might be off..or he could just be 5 and clumsy...

and with the speaking issues, does he hang around anyone like that? kids tend to take on actions of others. my nephew started to stutter only b-cuz a kid in his class has a legitimate stuttering problem.

Take him to the pediatrician, and have them check his ears. Balance is focused in the ears. My little brother had the same problem, and we found out that he had to get tubes in his ears for awhile.

You can talk to his pedi about it.

Did he crawl? Babies who dont crawl tend to have these sorts of issues. Some kids just are this way, he probably needs to physical therapy to gain better control of his body.

Sports would probably do him wonders. Sign him up for soccer or baseball.

Kids out grow this sort of phase.
