Yes. If you don't get promoted to Major after 12 years of active federal service then you are separated from the Army. You get three chances to get promoted beginning at 10 years. Separation for Lieutenant Colonel (grade above Major) is 18 years, but the army cannot force you to retire after you hit the 18 year mark (they let you stay until 20).

So the only promotion you have to make in order to stay until retirement is Major. There are maximum years of service for other ranks as well, but you've already hit retirement by that point so no one really cares too much.

(Promotion to Captain - the grade below Major - is automatic based on time requirements as long as you're not completely incompetent)

People with a community college or a 2 year degree will not be promoted beyond O-3 and thus need a bachelor or a 4 year degree to go higher than an O-3. People have retired as an O-4 in 20 years and it depends on your branch and how critical your profession is.

The US Marine Corps have a strict time limits with Non-Commissioned Enlisted, Non- Chief and Chief Warrant Officers, and Commissioned Officers.

Just remember that 3 bad OER's, Officer Efficiency Reports, can technically get you fired or kicked out even if you have not fulfilled your obligation.

The average time to make 0-4 is 12 years of commissioned service. Very few make 0-4 in 8 years of commissioned service. No it is not true all officer must advance to 0-4 to retire.;

Yes, that is true. Promotions up to Captain are automatic as long as your record is clean. Then for promotion to Major and every rank after that you get 3 chances to be selected for promotion. If you don't make it after the 3rd try you are forced to retire. Although, there are not very many Captains who can't make it to Major and there are even fewer Majors who can't make it to Lieutenant Colonel. The 3 chances rule usually doesn't come into play until you're trying to make full bird Colonel or Brigadier General.

yeap. Up and Out. In the Navy, if you fail to select for the next highest paygrade after three times up, you are politely asked to go home.

O1 to O3 are usually automatic promotions. O4 and up, however, your file goes before a Board who then decides if you are good enough on paper to promote.

In most cases, you will be allowed to retire at 20 years if you are close.

Yes, same for enlisted. You have so many years to make the next rank, and if you don't, then you can't play in the Military anymore.

All Military, enlisted or officers must be promoted within a certain amount of time or they get the shaft!

No, although it looks bad for someone to have been in the Army for five years and still be a 2LT or something. I've known captains who had been captains well past the threshold where they'd normally have become majors; and it's usually because they only had themselves to blame. The Army isn't likely to kick out its own commissioned officers for something like that.
