My dog and cats are fed a raw diet. They eat meat, meaty edible bones and offal with the occasional table scraps thrown in. It is cheaper than commercial food, species appropriate and MUCH better for their health (the fact that poop output is hugely reduced is another bonus!!)

After heaps of research I feel that this is the healthiest option for my pets. They are carnivores and should be fed that way. More and more people are feeding their pets based on a more natural diet and many informed vets are recommending this too. The health problems linked to commercial food that is loaded with inappropriate and often poor quality ingredients are well documented.

This link is to a great feeding guide, published by Dr Tom Lonsdale - a vet with many years of experience and research into animal nutrition.

We are feeding our dogs Merrick Puppy Plate. For older dogs the Merrick Wilderness Blend is also great with buffalo, venison and salmon in it along with veggies. It makes its own gravy when water is added. My dogs love it. We also get beef bones at the store for them in the meat dept. When my hubby gets a deer he will give them the scraps and bones. Chicken and turkey necks, backs and wings are good for them as long as they are raw. They also love fresh fruit and veggies. If we run out of dog food I will make them oatmeal mixed with squash or other fruit.

I have 4 Siberian Huskies, my vet recommended I get a food that contains OMEGA 6 & OMEGA 3 acids to help the upkeep of their beautiful coats and skin. It's expensive 15lb bag for $35.00, but with a higher quality food the dogs eat less since there aren't as many fillers....and as a result of eating less, they poop less YAAAAH!!! I would check with your vet and see what they recommend for your specific breed of dog. Premium dog food costs way more than a commercial brand, but it's worth it to see happy and healthy huskies!

Anyway, here's info on what I buy:

Eukanuba Canine Response KO Dry

(Kangaroo & Oats)

Response Formula is designed to aid in the nutritional management of skin and coat problems in several ways. First is through fatty acids. Specific types, called omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids, are important. Response Formula has an optimal balance of these two fatty acid types. Second, Response Formula includes alternate protein and carbohydrate sources, which can be important if your veterinarian suspects that your pet's skin condition may have a food allergy component. Response KO, for example, contains kangaroo meat as a protein source and oats as a carbohydrate source.

Different dogs take different types of foods. Labs are really prone to ear infections and food allergies, so you have to be really careful what you feed them. They still need meats, but it can't be something they would find in the wild. One of my labs eats Kangaroo meat and the other eats salmon. I have to special order these items through my vet though!

As puppies they ate Purina Puppy Chow, as adults, they eat Purina Little bitess. Those foods were never on the recall list and my chihuahua's are healthy
