conventional wisdom says to stay put, but im not going to do that. if im lost in the woods its because im being pursued by enemies. im going to go to the most inhospitable place out there, regroup, and help nature kill my pursuers. in your case, the best thing to do is stop crying, stop panicking, and wait.

If you have intention to go hiking in the wood, always prepare. A pocket knofe, a lighter or matches even you don't smoke. Learn your direction by watching the sun in a nice day. do not walk away from friends or other people. If you do, don't go further when you think you are lost. go to an open area, light a small fire to give smoke signal. don't burn down the forest. Beware of snakes and poisonour plants. Learn to find food.

If you are a rather inexperienced hiker/camper. Two items should be considered
prior to venturing far into a forest. And not a bad idea for even experienced outdoorsmen to carry them. Just in case of injury.
1. A whistle
2. Signaling mirror
Signal with both-wait for help. Do not keep walking. Wait for help in an exposed area.

If you know the general direction of 'home' ie 'home' is to the North, South, East or West, point the hour hand of your watch to the sun (assuming that it's visible) the 12 o'clock position of your watch points south (North if you are in the southern hemisphere (I'm assuming you know which hemisphere you are in!!)). If you know where south is you know North is in the opposite direction - 90 degrees to it is East and West - piece of cake when you know how.
And the beauty of it is as you walk towards 'home' you can keep checking by pointing the hour hand at the sun to keep you on track.
Stay unlost Bigpathome.

that depends on how bad it is.
if you have ever watched the movie 'blair witch project' you can see all of the things NOT to do.
if you find a stream - follow it - it will likely take you to life.
i won't say what you should do if you are truly desperate, because i think everyone would take it the wrong way and some people may do it just for kicks.
but desperate times should call for desperate measures...

Get in the fetal position. Just kidding. Clim a tree and see if you can see where you are. if you can't climb. Try to walk towards any source of water or wet place. It will lead you towards the closest inhabited place.

Stay put. And while you're waiting for rescue, consider the value of a good map.
