You might need to change your W-4 at work, check with HR/Payroll dept and see what you have for exemptions, you should be having 1 anyways. But, in addition to federal withholding, you would have state withholding, social security tax (6.2% of gross paycheck) and medicare tax (1.45% of gross paycheck). www.paycheckcity.com is a paycheck calculator website that can help you with what you should be claiming on your W-4 and what should be withheld.

Sounds maybe a little high, but not way out of line. Federal sounds about right if you claimed single/zero allowances on your W-4. Social security would be around $162, and PA withholding should be a little under $70. In PA there is a once a year tax for emergency services - that's usually $52 - if that was on there, it'll only be the one time until next year. It usually comes out of your first check for the year from that company. In PA you also pay at least 1% to the municipality where you live (higher in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh) which might have been most of the rest of it.

you should always estimate that 30-35% will come out in taxes, since that's the average including state, federal, social security and medicare. You lost about 30%, so that seems about right.

seems about right, welcome to America. Don't worry that tax money will go to good use to provide ridiculous salaries to members of congress.
