I got caught and all tied up in the net, couldn't get away. Well, isn't that true.

No matter what excuse you use, make sure it is believable. Don't say you were really ill and then be completely fine the next day. No matter what medicines you claim to have taken, unless you can pull off acting semi-sick. For example, you don't want to say you had a stomach flu or horrible diarrhea and then have no signs of it the next day. especially if you play off you were so sick you couldn't come into work at all or even call in. Just make it simple and believable. Also, apologize for not calling in, if you didn't.
As others have said, if you are a woman with a male boss, then use 'that time of the month' excuse. Unless you used it within the past two weeks. Other than that, I would suggest things like:
- "My neighbors kept me up late just partying hard. They were blasting the music and I couldn't get to sleep until early in the morning. I slept through my alarm (if you normally use one) and by the time I woke up, it was already way late."
- Food poisoning. That could last anywhere between a few hours to a good couple days depending on what gave you the food poisoning, how soon you treated it, and what you treated it with. You could say you ate some old pizza you thought was still good or something and treated it with Mylanta or Imodium or other strong treatments like that.
- Your parents or friends, or significant other really needed you to help them that day. Babysitting, moving, 'personal' issues, and so on.
No matter what you say, make is simple and believable. If you are going to use an illness as an excuse, make sure to keep acting at least semi-ill (kinda sluggish, slight trouble moving fast including walking like it makes you dizzy, and so on). Above all: don't be late often, make sure to call in with an excuse (whether it is legitimate or not), and don;t use the same excuses over and over. Pay attention to who you told what about why you weren;t there.

You ate something dodgy the night before and have been throwing up and/or having the runs to the toilet all night and into the early hours in the morning. You tried to sleep it off but when you woke your head was throbbing, you felt very weak, stomach was raw & you don't want to risk eating anything yet - you just need rest. It works everytime - just make sure you emphasise it was the FOOD that make you ill and not any ALCOHOL and work out what it was that made you ill - curry is normally the best one to say. It works everytime and cannot be proved if you were ill or not. You could also say you woke up with a throbbing migrane, took a tablet but you have blurred vision, nausea etc.

I stayed up all night looking at websites of an unspecified nature on my Chinese made computer wearing my Indonesian jeans and eating food exported by countries where most people don't get enough to eat. I was able to do this because of a grossly unfair economic system, which ensures I have huge global buying power, won't get sacked and will still get paid the kind of money most people can only dream of, even though I am quite obviously taking the pxxx. The people who made my jeans and just about everything else I own couldn't do this because a) they have no computer b) they are terrified of losing their badly paid jobs.
(But hey, don't feel guilty)

Well, did you at least call to say that you couldn't go to work?
If you didn't then you're really screwed. I don't know of any (good/legitamate) reason why you wouldn't be able to at least call. Maybe a power outage which effected your home and cell phone and you were dreadfully sick. Or dreadfully sick with food poisining and you didn't have the energy to walk to the phone to make a call. You were in bed all day sleeping. (Wait, I guess I can think of some pretty good excuses)

The best one I've found is "Trust me, you don't want to know."
Which usually means "uncontrollable diarrhea." No matter what, don't say that you went to the doctor or hospital, because they will ask for a note or a receipt from them to verify. The best excuse is one that means you couldn't leave home at all.
If you didn't call in, you can say that your phone service went out and you had to wait for the repair guy all day long. Totally believable, and it makes up for the fact that you never called in. :D
But next time, don't stay up all night!

Didn't you ring in today ??
Always ring in on the morning you are not in work. Your gonna have to have an extra good excuse if you didn't.
you could just say you've been throwing up, or if you didn't bother ringing in say one of your parents was ill and you had to travel to see them overnight, they are in hospital and you couldn't use your mobile and had more worrying things to think about than ringing in sick.
Your sick parent has pulled through and is out of danger now, which is why you are back at work, it might help if you don't go in tomorrow but do ring in and say you'll be in the next day due to your relatives' illness. (heart attack, stroke, kidney failure) something decent.

you could give several options-
1. you were ill- but you need to make it a viable reason for not going in such as diorrhea, sickness etc
2. 'Womens problems' especially if your boss is make, mention that and there will be no further questions
3. your mum/ dad/ brother/ sister is really ill and you had to look aftre them
4. you were in acar accident/ fell from somewhere/ caught up in a brawl etc
5. you had a migraine and had to go to the doctors.
... anything relaly just make sure you keep your straight!!
