The question is so general that we could also ask the same thing about almost any other historical figure. Was he the real one or an impostor? Are Hitler, Elvis, John Lennon and all the rest having a vacation in Bahamas? ...

So, I think that some faith or believing is needed to accept Jesus as the son of God. I guess that, historically, we can affirm that Jesus existed, was rather charismatic, worked wonders or miracles, etc. The rest is up to you. Try reading the Gospels with an open mind. Ask the priest at your parish.

most of the bible is not evidence their is no proof of a roman census at the birthplace of the father and the Romans done censuses for taxation purposes and would of been the place they lived, and the amount of babies estimated to be born the same time as Jesus (not same day but month) is seven or eight but not hundreds taking the populous in to account and any slaughter of children on a scale of hundreds would of been documented by foreign ambassadors and soldiers.
the rest of the life of Jesus is sketchy at best as not even the Messiah would do miracles on a Sabbath day and the Messiah was always supposed to be a warrior kind of like king Arthur, and in jewish prophesy the messiah would not be as close to god as jesus is supposed to of claimed. his death is also scetchy as he died a roman death crusifiction was for Roman citizens only and six hours was a rediculously short time to die that way and pitate was no fool he was governor for 20 years and roman governors dont normaly last that long even if they are compitent and blasphamy was not a roman crime but a jewish crime which is punnishable with death by stoning so it is unlikely the jews were responcible at all.
but their is evidence that some people in the bible existed such as the high priest whose coffin has been found(cant remember proper name but it is a small box possibly for the bones) and their is evidence that jesus 's family existed and were land owners and quite rich as land owners tend to be especialy farmers and craftsmen but jesus is still a mystery as to if and how he lived although i think he did just not in the way the bible says, and you need to remember their was a hell of a lot of prophets around then.

If he existed then he was probably a radical Jewish preacher and may well have believed he was the son of god but of course he was not. The story is that Herod wanted to kill him when he was born but Herod died in 4BC so if Jesus was born in 1 AD then he would have been quite safe. The character we call Jesus is also a Islamic prophet and a unique one as he is their only prophet that ascended to heaven bodily and they believe he will return. there are of course over 30 gospels and we only have 4 in the bible. Some of them do not mention the crucifixion are rising form the dead so the whole thing is so full of contradictions and obvious myths that I cannot understand how anyone takes it seriously

Well, I would say that Jesus for sure was Jesus because He performed many miracles and He rose from the dead after 3 days. If Jesus wasn't the Son of God how would He have rose from the dead? If He were anyone else do you think He would have died for our sins would you die for my sins? No, because you don't know me but He did and died for me and you... and you ask how we know He is the REAL DEAL trust me He is the Real Deal! Faith goes a long way honey!

He is a living examples of the Son of God.
When we were suppose to be the descendant of Christ.
The creation of living human kind into mankind of intelligent design with success in worshiping God.
Somehow with blunders and slip-ups with human errors created back in the past being expose with time after the mystery of us-911.
Found that we have been kick on the butts without being aware of the mess out there.
Being created to be the Son of a dirty old man of failures and horrors of the past from the graveyards of different ghostly ancestor's culture and custom without being aware of getting kick on the butts for climbing up the coconut trees and still look green at loss and stranded on planet earth.
Luke 6.46-49

I recommend reading the Book of Urantia - particularly the papers on the Life and Times of Jesus - to gain a full understanding of the true miracle and blessing Jesus' incarnation on Earth represented.

The entire book is freely available on the internet.

Does this mean that you do believe that there is,was, will be a son of God who comes to earth?

Jesus didn't hide. It was His parents who heard God tell them to take the child out of harm's way when He was an infant.

There is more historical evidence; (witnesses who wrote of what they saw with their own eyes) than any historical fact for many centuries afterwards.

Why is this an either/or thing? There are other possibilities. It's possible that he never claimed to be the son of God, or that half of what's written about him never even happened, or that he never existed as a single historical figure in the first place (especially when there's so little written about him and no first-hand accounts).
