I know the bag always says, "This side up" but why do you have to put it that side up? One I forgot to put it the right side up and it burnt, leaving an acrid smell and a charred bag of popcorn. How come it only works on one side and what is the sciene (if there is any) behind it?

yes you have to put it "that side up"
it has to do with how the bag for the popcorn is constructed.

cos the ingredients to make the popcorn pop & the sweet or salty stuff, is on the side you put face down.
they used to have a special paper .. but they've evolved i do belive .. frm the packets in my cupboard anyhows.. ;)

i think its the way the bag is shaped and cunstructed...if you put it the wrong way the folds will not expand while popping...
