A B-52 bomber was mistakenly armed with six nuclear warheads and flown for more than three hours across several states last week, prompting an Air Force investigation and the firing of one commander, Pentagon officials said Wednesday.
The incident was so serious that President Bush and Defense Secretary Robert Gates were quickly informed and Gates has asked for daily briefings on the Air Force probe, said Defense Department press secretary Geoff Morrell. He said, "At no time was the public in danger."

The missiles weren't armed. They were loaded onto the wing pylons. The munitions squadron commander at Minot Air Base has been relieved of duty. So have the technicians who loaded the missiles onto the aircraft's wings. They've also been relieved of any duties involving weapons handling.
Commanders aren't "fired". Nuclear weapons are only armed when approaching the point of release of the weapon onto a target. And most AP reporters don't know this because most have never served.

Being safe is an illusion and what you have written can happen even when a Democrat is in office. General LeMay disregarded President Kennedy and did not get the Courts Martial that he deserved.
Quit blaming Dubya for everything.

At least it was an American plane full of nukes and the US Air Force never drops bombs on anybody but the bad folks. So sleep easy under your stars and stripes duvet, you are perfectly safe America the Pentagon said so!

The fact that a B-52 was armed with live nukes makes me wonder about the state of our own nation's security.

You can't trust anybody or anything with your safety. Do your best to guard it as well as you can, but realize that we live in a dangerous world, and know you're more likely to die from driving a car (~40,000 people every year) or eating fatty foods (!100,000 every year) than from a nuclear bomb (~222,000 back in 1945).

No. And we never have been. Stuff- "happens". Accidents; crashes; disease; violence; earthquakes & bad weather... -Think you're "safe" & you're just ASKING for trouble! But rather than get our "panties all in a bunch" about it- all we need to do, is keep our eyes open, our wits about us, and a small supply of renewable provisions at hand -to make us about as "ready" as we CAN BE- for whatever happens. And Stuff WILL happen... -THAT'S something we can count on. :)

Stop worrying about BS..... My theory on the reason he is getting fired is because this got out to the media. How do you people think they transport those things in the first place?
