Well this was after the whole "I'm mad a the world, so I'm going to flood you out" event...maybe this was a "here is what they did to tick me off so don't do these things" kind of letter...
I'd fly right if I didn't know how to swim.... ;)

Were they a "killing, adultering, thieving, liying, abusing" bunch? I would say yes, actually. Still are sometimes.
Hunter-gatherer communities were somewhat egalitarian, but civilization changed things because communities were too large to hold individuals accountable.
I kind of think a lot of the moral progress of civilization has been a restoration of the basic ethical sense that guided hunter-gatherer communities.
Just read Columbus' own account of the Iroquois -- they were FAR more ethical in their behavior than the English colonists. Too trusting though.

Yes, humanity was a killing, adulterating, thieving, lying, abusing bunch at that time, and it still is. Humanity was also full of loving, honorable, honest, compassionate people, and still is. The Ten Commandments are God's check list for those who want to be the latter.

There were actually something like 633 commandments...but after the temple was destroyed for the second time, only 10 or so really applied to daily life..the other 623+ applied to the temple.
Of course humans did just fine without the commandments, and I am sure it was like it is now, "the world takes all types of people." There were probably murderers, stealers, moralists, followers, leaders, etc. just like there are now. God just came along and said hey if you believe in me, you will live your life accordingly, and these laws are part of it.

In case you haven't noticed, throughout history "humanity was just a killing, adultering, thieving , liying ,abusing bunch".
God published the rules to show us how we need him to make things right.
What makes you think anyone did "so well" befoe or after the ten commandments. Seems to me most people don't even read them or know where to find them.
Oh, and the thriving part. Most people do follow one commandment of God: "Be fruitful and multiply"

We must thrive with more than the 10 commandments
as Jesus said you need more things when he talk to the one who keep all the commandments and love him for that but it not complete yet. Mr. 10:21.

First off, they are not the "ten golden rules of God". They are the basis of the covenant law GIVEN to Israel through the mediator, Moses. Scripture refers to this as "the law of Moses".
And how did you conclude humans did so well without them? You were there?
Every culture had laws, designed to spell out what was not acceptable in their cultures, and the punishments codified to punish those who transgressed.
So your reality check is to understand the law, including the ten commandments, was not written for the good people, but for the bad:
1 Timothy 1:9 Knowing this, that the law is not made for a righteous man, but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and for sinners, for unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers,
10 For whoremongers, for them that defile themselves with mankind, for menstealers, for liars, for perjured persons, and if there be any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine;

"humanity was just a killing, adulterating, thieving , lying , abusing , bunch at that time?" And we haven't changed. The Law doesn't do anything for us other than to show us just how evil we ALL are in the site of a Holy God. In showing us this condition shows us how much we are in need of redemption. That leads us to the redeemer Jesus Christ.. That is where God wants us to find Him... Jim

Before I read the Bible, I would always solve my problems by killing people. I constantly cheated on my wife with my neighbor's wife. And I stole everything I had.
Thank God He made it clear that these are big no no's in His book!
I have the ten commandments printed out, and taped to the ceiling above my bed, so when I wake up I can remember not to kill people today.
