You eat them just as they are; you can also make them into something like guacamole dip. The easiest way to eat them is to cut them in half length-wise, and seperate the halves. Take a spoon and pop out the seed. The skin should come off very easily if it's ripe (ripe means black skin in avocados). You can slice it and eat it with a bit of salt; cut it up and put it in salads, etc. There are also lots of good guacamole recipes online - it's usually just a matter of mashing the avocado, adding some chopped tomato, spices, and serving.
My dad used to eat them sliced when I was a kid, so it's something I've always done as well. It's sort of an acquired taste; I think he got into the habit of eating those as well as fresh coconut when he was stationed in the Philippines during WWII. They are good for you except that they have quite a bit of fat (no cholesterol, though, as it's obviously not from an animal); they do have lots of different vitamins.

It is easiest to cut an avocado by slicing around the circumference following the stone like you would a mango - it can be twisted into two halves and the stone removed easily. Avocado is quite bland and very rich on it's own but can be sliced and added to salads with crisp lettuce (like Little Gem) and sugar snaps to cut the richness - dress with vinagrette. It can also be mashed and mixed with chopped spring onions, lime juice and seasoned well to make guacamole - use for dipping crisps/tacos in. They are high in monosaturated fat which is the good kind!

All the suggestions mentioned are great, but it's worth checking you get a good avocado first! They should be slightly soft from the outside (i.e. with the skin still on). If you buy them underripe, they'll just rot and go brown before they ripen. Hass avocados are my favourite as they tend to ripen easily and be quite soft. When ripe they should have a smooth, slightly buttery flavour, so if it really was disgusting, chances are it was underripe or going off.
Lightly mashed in a chicken and bacon sandwich would be my recommendation for those new to the avocado :)

Here's a recipe my mom gave me that has avocado in it. Fix it this way for your son and see if he scarfs it down. Everyone who eats it fixed this way - loves it. Invite his friends over to help him - watch a good game on TV. Enjoy!
7-Layer Dip
1st layer - 1 can Jalipeno Bean Dip
2nd layer - 2 avocadoes - seeds removed, peeled, and mashed with a little lemon juice (keeps it from turning brown)
3rd layer - Combine 2 T sour cream and 1/2 pkg Taco Seasoning Mix
4th layer - 2 c (1 each) Cheddar and Monterey Jack cheese
5th layer - 3 Roma tomatoes - diced
6th layer - 3 green onions - chopped fine
7th layer - 1 small can chopped ripe olives
Cover with saran and refrigerate at least 2 hours or overnight. Serve with Tortilla Chips or Doritoes.

like other people have said, make sure the avocado is ripe. if it's not, then it's pretty tasteless, hard, and not very nice to eat. you can get two types - hass avocado, which has a knobbly skin, and the other (i fofget the name, sorry) has a greener and smoother skin.
they're very good for you as they contain lots of monosaturated fat (which is the one that's good for you), potassium, vitamin e, and vitamin k.
can eat it as it is (though if not ripe then best not to. it also won't ripen anymore now it's been cut), make it into guacamole, put it into a sandwich, or a salad.
you could also make it into a face pack, or use it as a hair conditioner if you don't want to eat it. they are actually quite expensive, so best use it up in some way.

Avocados are not to everyone's taste. It's also very important to get a ripe avocado. It should feel firm to the touch, with a little bit of give. If it's rock hard it's not ripe and if it's soft it's over-ripe. If it's got black bits, scoop them out and don't eat them.
The best thing to do with over-ripe avocados is to make guacamole or make a sandwich of good toasted bread, mashed avocado, tomatoes, mayonnaise and s&p, add bacon if you like.
If it's a perfectly ripe avocado the nicest thing is to just halve it, take out the stone, and pour french dressing into the hollow. Eat with a spoon.

Lulu is right. Normally you use avacados for guacamole dip which you would mash up the green mushy fruit inside the avacado and add diced tomatoes and onions, cilantro, lemon or lime juice and salt and you can use this as a dip for chips or as a topping for tacos or enchiladas/tostadas. Plain avacado is good as a sandwich spread as well. I probably wouldn't eat an avacado on it's own... It's also good for your hair and skin ( so I've heard ). Have fun experimenting!

You can either eat them as they are (which many people like), or turn them into guacamole, or some other such thing. I actually like them - try having him put them on a sandwich (sliced) with other ingredients - he may like this. Another alternative is to mash an avocado with a bulb of roasted garlic and 1T olive oil and use as a spread for bread.
