Because we humans have self awareness. With self awareness comes arrogance and self-import. We think we are just so special that death is simply not possible for us.
Self awareness also spawns the facing of your own mortality. And THAT spawns fear.

Why should it scare you??? Rationally, if your done for ever once your dead, how will you regret anything...
But if your not finished when your dead, then maybe there is a consequence for your actions..
Therefore if you act selflessly in life rather than trying to find happiness in material possesions, it doesn't matter which reality exists in your after life, you won't have to worry.
You'll only worry if you live a selfish cowardly life! There will always be the possibility that life exists after death, and if you've lived a selfish life then that thought will scare you. If you believe there is no life after death, then why worry about dying?

Quite simply because you have a strong desire to be right. Most people do. The ego insists on it, and the idea that you have put all your energy and trust and faith and loyalty into something that is suddenly not there is very anticlimactic and scary.
You may also be a person who not only hates to be wrong, but you may have some controle issues and find it scary that things may be very different than what you anticipate.

Because you still think of it as something. When you die, and your are just done, you won't be anymore. You won't think, you won't do anything, you won't think about your life. Nothing, absolutely nothing, will matter. That isn't scary at all, that is the ultimate freedom. And you for sure won't be scared. Its like a rock being scared of water.

Because you were designed to live forever. Humans can't face the thought of not existing. It isn't natural to them, so that's why you have heaven, hell, valhalla, reincarnation etc throughout human history. The thought that we will cease to exist is unnatural to a species that was created perfect.

It used to scare me too, but i just ended up accepting it when i became atheist. For me, it was just part of the whole package.
Don't worry, it's natural to have a fear of death and "non-existance".

It's the scariest thought we face as mortals.
I'm agnostic, but please don't believe these atheists. Deep down, you can't just switch off the most natural of human fears. They're just suppressing it with their logic. They refuse to admit anything emotional...only logic. Such boring robots.

Wouldn't just being DONE, be better than living eternally? Living eternally is way far scarier than just being DONE.
