to be clear, the dog isn't well enough to fly, but should be OK to go by sea.

I agree, it's too long by boat timewise, I am sure your vet can give your dog sleeping pills (or some medication) for the plane journey.
It would be much cheaper in the long run and less stressful for your pet.

Why send it by sea? Airlines move pets all the time and do so with the least amount of discomfort for the pet. Dogs and cats can get seasick and if you are not on the ship with them you will need to pay someone to feed and exercise the animal. On a six week trip, that is going to be expensive.

When the animal arrives in the UK it will have to go into quarantine. As far as I know, there are no exceptions. The quarantine station is at Heathrow - convenient for all the pets coming off aeroplanes. You would have to arrange (and pay for) the quarantine officers to collect your pet from the ship and take it to the quarantine station.
