because using human guinea pigs/sacrafices is more inhumane & frowned upon:( mice are more ideal candidates because they don't resist nor have any clue/choice about being experimental specimens. gorillas and monkeys have similar genetics as humans, too, but it is more difficult to control their behavior, they're not as populated as mice and it is a bigger hassle to take care of them. if mice could talk, they'd probably protest against it,argue that they have "feelings," which they weren't able to coherently express before due to their lack of speech-ready vocal cords and should be treated better because that mouse they just tested that medicine on was their beloved relative, who suffered a horrible pre-mature death! til then...they are our nameless heroes.

Among the few uses of mice includes primarily for the production of biological reagents, such as monoclonal antibodies and vaccines. They are also used to assess the safety of drugs and vaccines made for medical use.

Why use mice? Mice have remarkable genetic similarity to humans. They are used in biomedical researches as models of human beings to understand the human body, determine the effects of diseases, and develop treatments for diseases.

The fact that mice are small make it very convenient to handle in performing tests and mice are inexpensive to maintain. The short life span of mice and their and rapid reproductive rate make it possible to study disease processes throughout their life cycle. It is also easy to perform different tests (new procedures, drug tests, tests for new cure for a certain diseases, etc.) on them.

1) They are genetically very similar to humans so in many instances medicines will behave in mice in a way similar to that which is expected in humans.

2) It is possible to obtain mice with a well defined genetic make-up (heritage/pedigree) so that one can attempt to eliminate many of the varied responses to drugs/therapies introduced by genetic variability.

3) They're relatively inexpensive.

4) They breed really quick so you can look for inherited traits/effects from medications etc.

they use mice beacuse mice are mammals just like humans and they have very simliar anatomy. They are also have the same tolerances, like heat and cold. thats why they make excellent canditates for testing.
