A number of the answers here are valid. It costs a lot to produce those telethons, and additionally, there is the administrative staff of the MDF that has to be paid. People that work for non-profit outfits tend to make less money than their for-profit counterparts, but they still have mortgages, children to feed and bills to pay.
As much as possible, non-profit groups use volunteers to do a lot of the work, but some things just can't be done that way.
Many charities have other groups that pay the administrative costs. For example, United Methodist Committee on Relief doesn't use any money donated to it for its own expenses, because the central church organization pays those. (I believe that the "United Appeal" organization mentioned earlier is affilliated with the Presbyterian Church.)
One way or another, someone has to pay to keep the lights on and the office rent paid.
The latest financial report from the MDA (and yes, someone had to be paid to produce it) gave the following breakdown:
77.4 percent was dedicated to program services. Fund-raising costs accounted for 15.2 percent, and management 7.4 percent.

Where all this usually goes -- to Administration. It takes a lot of paperwork to keep track of all this money and the donors, etc. Also, while the facilities may be donated, the personnel to actually PRODUCE the show may get paid (that, I don't know for sure). Follow-up work, posting of checks -- it is an endless paperwork nightmare. I've met Jerry -- it definitely does NOT go into his pocket. But he is generous with his OWN money as well, I can tell you that from personal experience (I was his caddy once -- long ago and far away!).

No, they pay the help...camera men, sound men, etc. Not every one works for free you know. And Jerry Lewis has raised so much money for his kids that if he did take a portion, so what? He deserves it.
