I stopped my cat from jumping on the table with this product called SSSScat. It's an aerosol can with a motion detector on it. It makes a spraying noise whenever it sees motion and scares the hell out of the cat.
I suggest you get a few of these products and set them up around the sandbox when the kids aren't playing in it, the cats will eventually learn that this place is off limits.
Here is a link: http://www.ssscat.com/
You can buy it on amazon.com too.
Good luck.

Do you care if the sand gets a little damp when the kids aren't around?
There's a product that uses a motion sensor to activate a sprinkler valve. The intended use is to frighten deer away from gardens.
If you want to fully automate the system, you could put it on a timer and set it to only go off when the kids would normally not be in the box - tho' on a hot day, my guess is they'd probably like it if it did! There are even timers available that can handle days of the week, for 24 hr protection on the weekends, but they're more expensive.
It probably wouldn't require a real powerful spray to scare cats away, just a few mist spray heads like they use on those drip watering systems would work, I'll bet.

Couldn't you cover it with a heavy plastic tarp? That will do the trick, and be a very cheap fix.
Other possibilty, spray citrus scent around the sandbox. Maybe Orange Clean or Orange Glo, something like that? Or a cat repellant. Pet stores carry many, such as Outdoor NO! for cats. No guarantees.
The surest bet is the plastic tarp. If they can't easily get at the sand, they'll most likely just look for someplace else to do their business. They're too smart to bother with trying to dig through the tarp in most cases, not worth the trouble.
If all else fails, just do away with it and get a smaller one you can cover. That's the only sure way. Good luck!

The only answer IS a cover of some sort. Can you lay a large plastic tarp over it?
Sand is a magnet for any cat. Absolutely nothing else you can do will keep them from using this.

I don't know why you can't pull a tarp or something over it while it's not in use. It really is the best way to keep cats out.
Try spraying the area with a water/ eucalyptus oil mix. Cat's don't like it much and it'll be safe for the kids.

You don't need to use a dog anyways- that's pretty harsh. Most sandboxes come with a cover- it it doesn't use a large plastic tarp (buy at any hardware store or even Walmart) and cover it up at night. Don't hurt the poor cat.

You are going to have to find a way to cover it on a daily basis when not in use. There are sprays you can use to detour them but that will add up $$ so it is best to invest in a cover of some sort. Good luck.

You can't and if you are letting the kids play in it even when you clean the feces out you are setting yourself up for major problems. Get rid of the sand box all together!

talk to your vet or pet store and see if there is something you can add to the sand that puts off a scent. Cats dont like strong odors, especially citrus. Make sure it is non-toxic though.
