5 then start the engine and let run for 10 to 15 seconds to fill the filter then recheck, I am pretty sure that chrysler V8 engines take about 6 quarts total. This is the process with most V6 & V8 engines, if you have a 4 cylinders you would do the same thing except start with 4 quarts.

the recommended oil is 10w30, the filter is 16 (add your favorite brands prefix to that number).
only fill it with 5 quarts, no more.

you dont blow out seals by overfilling the crankcase with oil.
what you do is actually starve your engine of oil. the crankshaft slops the oil around til it turns a foamy and frothy and the oil pump cant pump foam.

and no the 1500s are not known for doing this.

The easy answer: Buy six quarts of your favorite oil. Drain the oil and replace the oil filter. Pour in four quarts. Run the engine check for leaks. Check the oil on the dipstick and you will find it is one quart low. Add a quart and it will be full or in the upper hatched area(safe) on the dipstick. If it needs a quart of oil before the next change, you will already have one.

Anthony, after looking at your answer, and then reading Rob's answer, I can see why the Dodge service department at the dealership I work at (formerly Honda, Nissan, Dodge... now just Honda), had such a GREAT reputation. Their techs are real rocket scientists. No wonder Dodge's have so many main seal leaks... it seems they put a quart too much oil in them. Hmmm. Replacing a front or rear main seal costs about $800 and pays about 7.5 flat rate hours.

4-5 quarts of 10w 40 and make sure you change your oil filter also but make sure you do not overfill because 1500 are bad for blowing seals i would prob only put 4 1/2 in my opinion juts to keep it safe.
