I never thought that they did, but recently someone I know was badly attacked while petting one and required many stitches. I know it ultimately depends on the dog and its owner, but do sheepdogs have a natural incline to do this?

All dogs have teeth, all dogs are predators by nature, all dogs will bite if pushed beyond their ability to tolerate it. Owners, & trainers set that limit copled with a smallish herititary temperment portion . In a well socilized dog that limit is very very high, in a poorly socilized or abused one or in one with a "fruitbat" temperment it can be quite low...
not being sure what breed you mean by "sheepdog" Old english? I can't be sure if its a breed with many fruity individuals

You don't mention what kind of sheepdog? There are many different varieties. Some like the Austrailian Cattle Dog and Queensland Heeler can be more "sharp"; than their counterparts like the Shetland Sheepdog. Most dogs will be protective with their family, and it doesn't matter what the breed.

When you talk about attacks with any breed of dog you must ask yourself was the attack "provoked" or unprovoked". Was the person who got bitten provoking the dog? Did the dog just decide to attack out of the blue, without any intereaction between human and dog beforehand?

No, sheepdogs do not have a natural inclination to attack people. And with any dog, it does depend on how the owner trained and raised the dog.

This is an unfortunate event, but the "breed" should not be judged by the actions of one dog. With all the breed specific legislation sweeping the country; the battle cry of dog lovers should be BAN THE DEED, NOT THE BREED. It's the best advice anyone can give.

Of course not, no dog does.

If an Italian viciously attacked somebody you wouldn't ask, "Do Italians have a natural incline to attack?"

Well I hope not anyway!

No dog has. Its the training, how the dog was brought up and I think, how the owners are with the dog, even just subtleties. Dogs can sense negative energy and that will affect them.

And what do you mean by sheepdog? A border collie? Rough collie? Old English Sheepdog? Shetland Sheepdog? All very different breeds.

I have found collies to be extremly friendly. Some are, some aren't, just like any breed, or person.

Good luck!

There are dogs that are animal aggressive and there are dogs that are people aggressive and they aren't the same thing. Also there are many different kinds of sheepdogs. There are dogs bred for herding and those bred to guard flocks, so there's another difference. But generally speaking dogs bred for herding or guarding flocks or livestock are usually not animal aggressive..that wouldn't make sense. And I don't think it's normal for any dog to be human aggressive. But any dog badly bred or unsocialized or trained can act aggressive to not only people, but other animals. It just depends on the humans involved

There are lots of different breeds of sheep dog, most have at one time been nasty because they herded and protected sheep from wolves and other animals. Some remain very protective of their owners and the children (herding instinct) Most I have come in contact with have been fairly gentle.

no dog has a natural inclination to do this- pitbulls, chihuahuas, sheep dogs, beagles etc. Bad training, bad owners end of story.
