I have a good friend of many many years and most recently he's been hinting quite a bit that he has feelings for me. He's a great friend, and I don't want to lose him as a friend, but I'm simply not interested in him romantically. Also.. I feel incredibly awkward about this, I can be socially awkward at times, so preferably I'd like to tell him in a way that's easier for me, maybe less confrontational, and more subtle?

Unfortunately there really is no un-akward way to tell someone that you are not interested. Especially if they are a friend. But if you just be honest with him and tell him exactly what you said here, if he really is a good friend then he'll understand. Some people just don't click romantically.

Say, "hey, I like you. I wanna be friends, though, so if you don't think of me like that, just lemme know." And make sure to keep eye contact with him. If he looks down, fine, but you better not. You can also add a shrug at the end if you're feeling casual enough.

Yea, the only hint that he would actually understand is : (1) you try to help him find another girl that you honestly think would make a goog girlfriend for him; or, (2) et a new boyfriend of your own and say that you have a new boyfriend.

Otherwise, you will simply have to tell him that you just want to be friends. You will hurt him no matter what, so just get it over quickly, and leave no doubt (false hope).

I was in the same boat as you...i finally told my best-friend who was head of heels for me, that we are just too great of friends for it to be ruined....pretty much saying you're more of a brother than a lover...It will take time for him to realize, but he will & have to understand that.

He'll be hurt no matter what...if he does it in front of you or not. You'll feel like you're damaging him, but really you're not. You're just telling him that you dont feel what he feels.

When I told my best-friend that I didnt have feelings for him, he almost cried, but I also told him that it isn't fair for the both of us to carry on a relationship like that to where we can't share the same feelings for each other.

There is no least awkward way telling him then to just let him know what you feel & how it would effect your guys relationship now.
