the person at the receiving end has made a mistake? A mistake is only a mistake based on that individual's point of view - while another individual may view it as correct & the right thing to do... then why do people respond so harshly and demean the poor person? Are they trying to force their point of view on the person?

If this is a conversation amongst adults - shouldn't it be polite, instead of getting all hot and bothered?

I'm sorry I have no blanket answer to explain human behavior, we are complicated creatures and are generally motivated by preservation/promotion of the self. I do think the conversation should be polite, especially since this isn't really a forum for conversations. But I do think your assumption that all who participate in Yahoo Answers are rational, level headed intelligent people is unrealistic...especially when the basis of your question demonstrates that it clearly isn't the case.
Good luck and great question!
