First off let me say...Slayer 06, I hope you didn't get rid of those albums. I would keep them for sentimental reasons since they belonged to your dad.
Now then... AHEM, Johnny Winter is one of the best guitar players out there. He is a premier blues man in every ones eyes. I know that he has been in poor health lately and still he keeps playing shows. I haven't ever been able to catch him live but hope to soon.

I first saw Johnny Winter in 1970 with his original band, Tommy Shannon and Uncle John Turner. Edgar Winter guested on a few songs. What an incredible night. Johnny used an ancient Fender electric 12 strong for slide playing.

These days, he seems to use that stick guitar and I was sad he had some sound effect on it. His straight playing cuts through you.

Johnny Winter is probably the most underrated guitarist and singer out there. Johnny has proven himself equally adept in blues, R&B and rock-n-roll genres. His slide guitar playing is second to none and he is one of the few who have adventured with the Gibson Firebird guitar.

All of his Columbia albums (Johnny Winter, Second Winter, Johnny Winter And, Johnny Winter And Live, Still Alive and Well and Saints and Sinners) are in my collection, along with later releases on Blind Pig and Alligator.

Thank you for bringing up his name - it is so easy to forget such unassuming geniuses like Johnny Winter and I hope this will rekindle some interest in his work.

I've been a huge fan of his since the late 60's. I own everything he's ever done on vinyl and much of his catalog on CD as well. I've seen him in concert 8 times, the first being in 1971(I think) at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto.
For the last 15-20 years or so Johnny has been playing smaller and smaller venues. Going from filling football stadiums and hockey arena's, to filling 500 seater community halls, which was were I saw him this past February. I think the hall he played in held around 300 people, and it was a superb show!
I am a self confessed vinylaholic, and have been an avid collector for close to 50 years now. I sell vinyl LP's online from time to time, and I'm always buying collections from across North America and around the World.
About a year ago I acquired a large record collection from someone in Portland Oregon. Lot's of rare psych, prog rock, blues, metal etc. There were two sealed original copies of the 'Second Winter' LP on Columbia CS 9947. Any collector remembers that this album originally came as a double. Record 1 had two sides, while record 2 had one side...a three sided LP!
It was reissued many times in the 70' and 80's, and is even being repressed now, but they've compressed all 3 sides into 2.
As I was flipping through the Johnny Winter section of this collection, I found the 1st sealed copy and freaked! As I flipped through a little further I came across the 2nd sealed copy and freaked some more! I sold one copy on eBay awhile ago for $574.00 US. The other sealed copy will be opened like a fine bottle of wine someday!
Johnny Winter has always been one of my favorite performers/guitarists. His music is like a time capsule for me.
At one show in 1989, I brought along several of his album covers. It was at a casino, and the venue held maybe 1500 at the most. Our table was right up front, and close to the stage door. Johnny's bus was right outside. At one point, I thought the show was over because Johnny left the stage. So I sprinted towards the door, blew past security guards and headed towards his bus with an armful of album covers. It turns out that Johnny only left the stage for a moment to grab another guitar...false alarm. I repeated this again when the show was over, and I was first in line outside the bus. The driver saw that I was by myself, and wanted autographs, so he and a security guard let me on the bus!! Seriously!
A minute later there was a hundred people lined up outside the bus. I got there just in time. Johnny boarded the bus, and I introduced myself and we shook hands. He asked me if I enjoyed the show, and I said something like "yeah, it was *****' great"! He signed all of my albums. His 1st LP titled simply Johnny Winter was a black cover, with a color photo of him in the center. He signed his name right across his forehead, and I'd have to say that cover looks pretty cool framed and hanging on my wall!
Johnny is as icon, and each time I hear the 'Johnny Winter And ... Live' album it really takes me back to that first show I saw back in '71 (I think).

Oh yeah. I am so impressed with Johnny. I happened to check him out at the Delaware Riverfront Blues Fest last year. He is very febel and has to sit the whole time. But don't let that fool you . His fingers still move faster than your mind.
I also got his autograph. Anyway he will be performing at the Keswick Theater in Philadelphia with Edgar and Rick Derringer on September 16th. I can't wait to go.

Sorry about this but we had looked forward to seeing Johnny since we were kids in 1968...Finally..Sydney's Hordern Pavilion 1986..feeling good..brought out to OZ by Hell's Angels..He hit the stage astride a horse so pissed he fell off and began a rambling set of 4/4 rock n roll for 90 mins at least..no blues..no slide work..no nothing..just a muck of speed, beer and.....oblivion.We were disgusted and fu8ked off..so disappointed. We are still fans but fu8k him.Johnny, you fuc8ing suck for that.

I took vacation last November, and spent about 500 bucks on tickets, hotel, gas, etc. etc. just to get the chance to see this living legend. I sat in the sound booth a while and the sound man said this was the best he had seen Johnny play in a while. I like to think he did it for me. He is getting very fragile, at 63 he is virtually blind. He played and sang like it was his love, and I'm sure it is. Would I do it again? Is the bear catholic? Does the pope **** in the woods? Heck yes I would!
