Good question. Believe it or not - Rotary Club and Lions Club can be beneficial. Big thinkers are part of organizations like that.
Also - get to know Sales men. Not that greasy used car guy down the road - but professional sales people. They all have to become masters of both Marketing and Interviewing.
They will give you Real world answers on what works and what doesn't.
Build a NETWORK of people. You can catch a fish with a fishing pole - but you can catch a TON of fish with a net! Get to know everyone you talk to. Ask them if they have a business card. Make a little one for yourself on Vistaprint.com. It can be as cute or professional as you want it to be - it is just you and your info. (If you actually have a biz card from work - obviously use that!)
Life is full of people who 'know people'. It is not 'What you know - but WHO you know!'
If you are patriotic - find out about local military organizations - like the National Guard. They usually have a get together one weekend each month - and when they do - their spouses will often meet up also. All of the Soldiers who serve in the Guard are Part-time Reservists. They (And their spouse) all have full time Jobs... and MANY of them are in Leadership positions in their civilian jobs - because of their training in the military. Go hang out with them one day, find out more about them and what they do in and out of the military. Find out if the spouses are sending anything to troops overseas and if so - see if you can help put together gift boxes. Each unit will usually have about 100 good contacts you can make by spending a couple hours there.
Just a couple of ideas - Good luck!
