I am in my final year of school this year and taking GCSE French. My French teacher said it would be a good idea to watch some French movies or listen to a radio station where they speak French to help us with our studies.
I live in the UK, near Birmingham.. I'm guessing I won't be able to pick up a French radio station on my normal radio, but does anyone know of somewhere online where I could listen?
Help will be much appreciated! Thanks!

Do you have itunes? If not, you can download itunes for free and they have a list of radio stations you can listen to for free. I listen to this French radio station called Frequence 3, that plays French and American music, but there are other stations too.

You obviously have access to the internet so I would recommend http://www.france24.com This is as it suggests a 24 hour news channel from France.

The good thing is you can choose whether you want to read it in French or in English so you can go back and compare.

I am pretty sure some of the stories are broadcasts rather than written, so you can listen to the French broadcast and then read the English written version and see how nuch you understood.

I know news is boring but I think it's worth a look.

XM radio has channels 100 and 102 that I listen to for French music....but, if you don't have XM, that might be a problem --- in which case, you could listen to the various radio stations on

Hope this helps, and bonne chance!

Go with Franck Z - I listen to the news every day on France Inter, but there are other ways of getting to listen to French if you can't get good reception. At the moment my favourite French singer is Maxime le Forestier (slightly dated) and I find his French understandable, and some of his lyrics really beautiful.

I'm in Quebec (Montreal), so french here is a bit different then the one in France (the accent is different), but it's still french.

Here are my local radio stations that you can listen to on the web;

This first one is international

You could listen to the webradio, or look at the webtélés there

There you go to 'écouter en direct'

'Écoutez CJPX en direct'

'écoute en ligne'

With the help of iTunes, check out Radio France's websites (France Inter, France Culture).

I would advise you "Rue des entrepreneurs" as an interesting (and maybe not too hard) podcast about today France (it's on France Inter).
Another one, but definitely harder, would be "Le Masque et la Plume" (still on France Inter).
If you enjoy something more in the fashion of BBC4's "In our time", you can try "Répliques" on France Culture (but it's a tough one, even though people won't rush as they speak!).

Usually, people advise (I do too) "C dans l'air", a daily show about on-going issues (it's TV, on a channel called France 5, it can be downloaded directly from France 5 website).

If you feel interested in a specific academic field, "http://www.diffusion.ens.fr", or directly "http://www.diffusion.ens.fr/index.php?res=podcast" will provide you (always with the help of iTunes, for instance) with recorded lessons or conferences taking place at the Ecole Normale Supérieure, which is one of France equivalents (though with fewer pupils) of Oxford-like universities...
