In Florida, police academies are primarily run by community colleges or state agencies.
All law enforcement officers in the state are certified as such by a governing body appointed by the governor called the Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission under the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.
All applicants must pass a state exam to certify them police officers and must complete a 40 hour mandatory retraining certification every 4 years to remain law enforcement officers.
Normally, to attend an accredited course you must be sponsered by a law enforcement agency. My own state has a "Reserve Academy" for those not employed but still sponsored by law enforcement.
You may wish to ask around about sponsorship!
Best wishes.

I actually went to that academy down in Ft. Myers, it's called the Southwest Florida Criminal Justice Academy, it's on Michigan Avenue(I think, been awhile) right smack in the hood. When I went through several years ago, it was about 4 1/2 months long, it's a bit longer now, they've added some stuff and completely changed the way they do the academy. Instead of a "classroom" set up, they do everything scenario based now.
You can put yourself through the academy, or get hired on by an agency and they'll sponsor you. I was sponsored through an agency, so I don't know the exact cost, but I want to say it was around $1500., plus you have to buy uniforms, and you need to prove you have some kind of medical insurance. I think they did offer some kind of discount insurance if you don't have any.
They've changed it a bit on getting into the academy, I believe there's 2 tests you have to take, fairly easy though. Background check, think they may even do a psych test now, and an interview. Your best bet would be to get hired on by an agency and have them sponsor you. A lot of the departments down there are hurting bad for deputies and cops. Check with Lee County SO, Ft. Myers PD, Cape Coral PD, Charlotte County SO, and Collier County SO. Those are the major depts. down there, lots of smaller agencies as well, but you'll have better luck getting hired on with the bigger depts. Good luck!

Get in contact with the police department that you plan to join; they can send you a packet where they can provide you with the information you need, including locations where you can take the FL LE Cert Course.
Good luck. :)
