I've seen different boards where debate is allowed and actually it's much nastier than Yahoo! Answers. Most debates just turn into a name-calling session.

I agree with Teeby. Debates will just turn nasty and ridiculous.
Here are the pros and cons of a debate:
Pros:
- Better understanding.
- Get your point across.
- More and better communication.
Cons:
- Discussions will turn sour very quickly.
- Yahoo Answers was made for its purpose as it is now. See its guidelines - it says something about "not to rant".
- Debates can change people's minds for the worst in some cases.
- It wouldn't be as organized as it is already.
- People would not write in proper English - more slang.
- Y! Answers would have to change its name.
- Y! Answers servers would probably go haywire since those talking about controversial topics will likely to get rude, abominable, scuzzy responses back.
- How would you want to get an answer back?
As anyone can see, the cons outnumber the pros - well those I could think of anyways. I think Yahoo Answers is good enough as it is -- in organization matters. People come on here asking about High School Musical, or if they're pregnant; personally, I don't see how that fits with the aim of a Y! Debate.

As much as I would love to be able to philosophize and discuss some of the questions and/or subjects on here, I don't think that having an open forum would work. Most of the hateful and abusive comments that I've seen have been about topics that are generally very touchy. There are some who will negate, criticize, and slur all the more if they had the opportunity.
If more folks would remember rule number one in philosophy, that people must be able to agree to disagree, then it might be a good idea. I just don't see it happening here all that often.

There are other places for that kind of scenario. This is of course, Yahoo!xtra Answers in which you can do one of four things .... ask, answer, discover and vote. The only reason why there is hatred, anger, and stupidity is because some people fail to recognize truth when they see it.
People that display these negative responses (anger, hatred, racism, etc) either cannot accept what is truth and retaliate because they do not know how else to deal with their own emotions .... or, they come on here to basically act stupid because they think they are anonymous.
One thing is for sure ... people are never anonymous on here. Someone somewhere knows who they are ...

Yes, definitely. However, most of the questions asked are either open and shut with answers a few clicks away on google or any other search engine. . .ie: song titles - if you know a number of words to a song, for goodness sake google it! - - -or the questions that make no sense, like does anyone have Brittany Spears telephone number? How do I get it?
Debate type questions, where in order to give an answer, requires some thought and opinions would be quite interesting.

There are some debate boards such as Craigs List but people who run out of thoughtful rebutals end up being horrible to each other.
I like yahoo because your answer stands and the person asking the quesiton can chose to accept the answer or ignore it. You generally aren't attacked there after.
I wish it were a better idea for bright people to debate but most of those sites get ugly fast.

No, that is why it is Q&A, not Q and debate! Just ask a question and read all the different answers you are given. You don't need to debate most of the things that are on here anyway. Most people just want advice, not a conversation. That is what chat rooms are for.

Great idea, except it kind of already is. As it is, most of the answers on here are actually arguments on the wording of a question or someone else's answer anyway. So it kind of is a debate forum, in a sense.
I think it could be improved by letting us pick best answer sooner than 4 hours.

I think that the overall quality of the answers to this question are the answer in and of itself. You would need some kind of screening process to ensure that people have and use a reasonable amount of intelligence.
The response to you show that this is not always the case here.

Debate ETIQUETTE???? Proper behavior is proper behavior, there can be no debate about that!
As for responding to answers, this is why I allow people to email me. I am not "afraid" of what others might write to me, and I cannot understand why some people disallow emailing. Yes, I've had my share of trolls, but thankfully they are few and far between.
Have a great day!
