Theologically there is the belief that sin has distorted the nature and appearance of Satan and the demons. Of course, the depictions are not real. What Satan looks like will certainly be a distortion of his original beauty. Evil itself distorts in terrible ways. But as has been said, he has the ability to "appear" as an angel of light.

The same reason he is depicted as Yosimite Sam with a red suit and a pitchfork. The more he can convince people to dismiss the idea of an adversary, the easier it is to attack.
Think of it this way. Suppose every time someone mentioned the Taliban all you could picture in your mind was Yosimite Sam on a camel with a big keg of dynamite. Or better yet, every time Al Qaeda bombed something, the leading scholars of the world said it was a natural phenomenon and Al Qaeda is nothing more than ancient mythology. How much easier would it be for Al Qaeda to operate, move across borders, etc?
Every military planner knows that misdirection and counterintelligence are the most effective weapons in the arsenal. Satan is no different. He may not have the power God has, but he's at least as smart as any human with a similar level of experience.

Any depictions of the Devil are symbolic, as we have no real description of it. The Devil is portrayed as physically ugly because it is spiritually ugly.
Not all depictions of the Devil are ugly. In "The Last Temptation of Christ" the movie, the Devil was portrayed as a sweet, kind-looking little girl. This was all the more chilling. And in "Bedazzled" the Devil is portrayed as a very attractive woman. Handsome devils are not too uncommon in popular culture. So, I think people do know that the Devil is deceptive.

Good question, i think it has something to do with red for danger, demons, monsters, ugly all symbolise all things we hate and are horrid, put the two together and you have a perfect image of all things bad.
if you look at Gods image he's in white, a peaceful virginal colour depicting all things pure, he's handsome, clean and shown in a gentle form floating on a white puffy cloud etc!
Please remember though it's only fictional to create the thoughts in our head, if you want a real picture just look in the mirror as you will see both images as we can all be good and all can be evil !!!

The image of satan was actually crafted to turn pagans away from their deities (like "the horned one" and "pan")
These strange gods had a kind of sex appeal that was missing from Christianity - so they had to get the spin room going and make their "evilest" character resemble them.
This is a historical fact - and not opinion by the way... even Bible scholars agree on this point.
The Christians and Pagans had on-going campaigns against eachother and during the blending of the two cultures a lot of imagery became more iconic than the simple mockery that they were intended to be.
As any Christian will point out - there is little to no physical description of Satan in the Bible... this is the creation of an image that is thousands of years in the making... some of which can even be traced back to a cartoonist working for warner brothers in the 60's.
(I am in awe at the answer from "zenmasterbob" below... zen practitioners (like myself) do not believe in ultimate evil...)

. That was just man's imagination. Does he even exist? We may never know unless someone rose from the grave. So in the end we make up how he looks like and becomes what you would say a Comic book character. or Just a character of some kind that people have put into their religions and it makes a story that they think is true. Like a little girl watching Beauty and The beast. You make up how he looks or go die and see for your self if he exists or not.

the devil is suppose to be the most beautiful angel, very smart and cunning. he uses these things to get close to you as he is not stronger than his opponent, whom is god.
we depict the devil as a horrible looking creature with horns because the religions that opposed us back in the day had gods with horns.
even today the devil is suppose to be the most tempting, the most beautiful, the best voice and the greatest trickster. even the beast that is to sit upon the throne will look and act like a normal decent human being until its plan unfolds. the mark of the best wont even be known as the mark of the beast to those who are first offered it. it will seem to be something normal, needed.
temptation, cunning, these are not traits of a brute strength, slaughter everything they see kind of demon. it is of the demon who pretends to be your lover, your savior and in the end, steals your soul.

From what I have heard Satan was God's right hand man so to speak. He was cast from heaven for defending mankind. SO for his morals he was cast out of heaven, so question is, is Satan really evil? Or is he just a Diety ( Yes demi God) That was fired and spoken of in shame and despise, because he did not agree. IF so then free will is something Satan was cast out of heaven for and if you show free will would you be allowed into heaven?
I know thats going to rile many of people up. But I can not stop and take everything at its word with out finding out more.
Always ask why? If you don't how do you know its true?

The devil could be deceptive, the one who come close to you as a friend..but could be possible ploting to make you fall, and sin..
The ones that would be obvious, could actually be the ones that have nothing to hide, it would be possible that he or she could also be the devil.
So, anyone could be the vessel of the evil..but there is no point in being suspious, the ones who could endure until to the end..would be with Jesus when he comes from the sky..dosen't have to tell you he is here, but everyone will see him..
