Most frequently a watermark in a digital photo is a method to alert the viewer that the image is copyrighted or not to be used unless bought. Typically we do this to the low res previews we put on our web sites to sell ourselves or our images. Hi-res images we sell do not contain this.

Most common watermark is the © symbol and your name.

In PhotoShop, simply add text to your image in gray and change the opacity of the layer so it is hardly noticeable but is visible. Merging layers is not required if you save the image for the web as a.jpg file since they can not retain layers and will merge them automatically..

If you want to use an image, the previous poster showed the correct method to create one on the fly.

The easiest way to add watermark is to use special software for adding watermarks.

I use AiS Watermark Pictures Protector:

photoshop -
1. Create a new layer
2.Create your watermark
3.Change the opacity of the layer until your satisfied
4. Flatten Image
5. Save as
