You know, this is a really good question. I do notice a difference in a few ways:
1. Squeaky sound sort of appears
2. Braking isn't as quick and requires a little more push on those levers (barely noticeable, but it's there)

I used to have V-Brakes for two years and I have to say that in comparison, disk brakes do not have any problems with heat what so ever! But alone and compared to rotor sizes as well as mechanical vs hydrolic - there is a bit of a difference. I would hesitate to call it a "problem" because they work fine!

It's not a real problem if you have them set up properly so the pads don't drag on the rotors. With discs you get much better heat dissipation than with rim brakes.

I read a ride report from someone who rode up and down Mt Washington in New Hampshire (elevation 6,900 feet) and on the way down he said his disks were glowing red hot.

no, unless you take it to the very extreme, down a very steep hill that is a few klicks long... in which case it just might be a little bit of a problem.

it might cause the metal to expand and touch the pads but no more then that
