The official site is this:
https://www.annualcreditreport.com
You can request a free credit report, once every 12 months from these credit reporting companies: Equifax, Experian and TransUnion
Be aware that there is no webpage where you can get your actual credit score for free. So if you are interested in your credit score after receiving your credit report you can request that too, for a smaller fee.

Go to AnnualCreditReport.com. It was set up by the credit bureaus to handle the free credit reports. It's the only site where you won't be required to sign up for monitoring or some other service that requires your credit card.
Credit reports are free but if you want your score you will have to pay for that ($6 to $8).
Checking your own credit report DOES NOT affect your score.

You are entitled to one free credit report from each bureau once a year. This is just the report it won't be your credit score.

I use freecreditreport.com. They allow you to view your credit through Experian for free. But only Experian. If you want to look at Trans... something and the other one, (I forget the names), you have to pay a fee. To get it through the mail, I'm not sure. But I do know that in California and a huge number of other states are entitled to at least one free report a year. So to answer that first question, yeah. You get one a year for free from one bureau only.
FYI: Checking your credit SCORE will cost...
No matter how many times you check your credit it will not affect your score....

In all states, a person can get one, and only one, per credit bureau for free from annualcreditreport.com. I do not know if NJ allows more.
Do not use the site with "free" in its URL. You have to enroll something that is not free unless you are able to cancel in time.

Did you know that every time there is a credit check on your history your credit rating score takes a little drop.
