Did they copy this from the Muslim women?

1 Corinthians 11: 5... But every woman who has her head uncovered while praying or prophesying disgraces her head, for she is one and the same as the woman whose head is shaved.

There is a full and complete "commentary" cited from "Biblemaster.com" below which explains the "context" in which this verse is from. It has to do with the practices of the early church, the superiority of men over women (yeah, controversial to this day!), and other stuff.... REALLY complex stuff. That is why it is best you read it for yourself.

And NO, the Catholic church did NOT copy this from Muslim women. Where do we keep getting the idea that the Islam came before Christianity??? It came AFTER Christianity!!!

Have a blessed day!

This isn't the custom in most Catholic churches anymore, but it was when I was a child.
No, they didn't copy it from the Muslims. Muslims and Christians both inherited this custom from the Hebrews. It went through a lot of changes over the years, since it is a cultural matter not essential to the faith.

It's something that comes from pre-Vatican II days -w hen the church rules were changed - some significant ones, like aying th mass in the common language, not latin, practice and dress of nuns and priests, etc.

It comes from a bible verse - cannot tellyou which one riht now -that is a mandate from god, which basically says prayer to god must be done with a covered head.

Many religions practice this - and have for centuries - The jewish, Mennonites, Amish, several other sects of Christianity as well as Muslim and some Hindus.

It's a world wise practice -not a new one.

As a Child, I attended a Catholic School taught by nuns; In those days, I always wore a long skirt and a head covering similar to the nuns'. They always told me I was one of them because of my dress.

Could be. I cover my head when I go into church no matter what religion the church practices. It's a sign of reverence.
What is your need to know?

The Bible says that women are supposed to cover their heads when they pray. Maybe they are from the old country so it's probably more common their then in the New country.

There is an old testament admonition about covering your hair.
It is not longer adhered to by most Catholics or other religions for that matter.

To my knowledge, I've only see older women do this. It's a generational thing.
