It was an attack on symbols of American political, military and economic might. Warfare is usually about getting an enemy to bend to your will rather than killing all of 'em off. Think about some of the things that started after 911 and you'll see that it worked out pretty well for Al Queda. There may have been better targets if Bin Laden's goal were to kill as many Americans as he could or to cripple our economy. But look at what he did get out of it:

He got America to notice the middle east. A few people also took notice of US foreign policy habits in general. When you start looking at the things the US does in other countries, it is hard to be proud of all of them--some are downright undemocratic, and others are closer to bribes (act this way, and we'll build you a power plant or something). Not only did it get our attention, but it also forced the US to respond with force. This gave his radical movement a real enemy--instead of a whole world full of infidels, there was now someone taking on the jihadists directly--which makes it easier to recruit new members willing to lose their life to that movement. The holy war he has been telling his followers about was kicked up a few notches and closer to a reality, rather than a radicals dream. Finally, it made it so that Americans have to watch what their government does in the rest of the world. No longer was anyone under the illusion that we can do whatever we want on the other side of the world and it will have no consequenses back home.

I'm not trying to excuse the 9-11 terrorists, I think your question was looking for the terrorist-eye view of the situation. I could write plenty on what was wrong with what they did, but I don't think that was the question. I don't think Bin Laden claimed credit for 9-11 (odd, because he had claimed previous attacks) but most intellegence indicates that he did order it, and it is clear that he praised the attackers. And no, it wasn't a warning. It was a call to arms.

actual is the section the place it got here approximately. How, and why are the questions of what's actual, and what isn't. you have many super solutions already, and there in basic terms isn't plenty i can upload with out working over somebody elses answer. I do think of this is available that the Taliban did it, yet... interior the eyes of historic past, some knew that Japan become going to attack Pearl Harbor. They allowed it to take place to alter the peoples morale from impartial, to desirous to circulate out and kick some a**. i think of that us of a does not help a conflict with out a reason, and so as that they allowed a sparkling reason to 'take place.' i does not placed it previous them to even have used CIA operatives to create the belief, and dupe the Taliban into doing it. sure human beings died, besides the undeniable fact that it have been given them the wars that they needed (sacrifice some pawns to crown a king) and that they even had public help (until it we've been already in Iraq). Iran is next regardless. What extremely looks unusual to me is that the Taliban has never attacked us on our soil returned. we've a Southern border with in basic terms a 'digital fence' preserving us. we're not combating them...they only are not doing it. Why not?! My suggestion is which you question each thing, and learn what you are able to...each thing isn't because it looks at 2d look.

I think it was a warning -- he wanted ATTENTION to be paid to his cause, which I believe is the destruction of the western/capitalist/democratic culture -- or at the very least, stopping that culture from infecting the Muslim world. Koranic law decrees that infidels and apostates must be destroyed and I think that the jihadists, having seen Western culture seeping into their society by way of mass media and globalization, are afraid that their way of life will be compromised, and are following the dictates of fundamental Islam. Osama was certainly part of a greater movement; he is a spokesman and a funder, but not the primary instigator. I think the fundamentalist movement of Islam goes far beyond the Taliban or Hamas or any particular group. The targets on 9-11 were symbolic of American ideals (Pentagon and capitol building = democracy and World Trade Center: = capitalism) -- the date was chosen for a reason (911 = emergency), as were the airlines involved (United/American). I think they were saying BACK OFF.

It's my understanding that someone within Al Qaeda approached Osama and offered him the plan for 9/11. He was seeking funding, and Osama offered it. Osama was on board because he opposed the US' alliance with Saudi Arabia and our intervention in the Middle East.

It wasn't intended to cause massive destruction, just enough to scare the people and make the government look incapable.

Crashing a plane into a nuclear power plant is not likely to trigger a nuclear reaction like a bomb. Worst case scenario some radiation might leak out of containment.

Osama attacked the US, because of our affiliation with an oppressive and brutal Saudi regime. He blew up the trade center because Saudi Arabia owns ruffly 7% of our overall economy... so attacking the trade center was really an attack on the US / Saudi financial relationship, additionally inflicting mass casulty and commanding the worlds attention. It's almost as if it was a direct "message" to president Bush, who actually has some history with the Bin Laden family.

However, if you posed this same question to Bush himself...he would probably respond with some familiar rehtoric...( Terrorists hate freedom and democracy )

The truth is our own foreign policy over the past 40 years, is largely responsible for the hatred that has boiled over in the middle east. Seems our government likes to paint us as liberators, when really we are just protecting our own economic intrests in the region.

Yes it was Osama Bin Laden. We know that.
Why the world trade center? It represented the epicenter of the free market system and was attacked by them once before. There were some 20,000 people there that could have been killed.
The pentagon represents the epicenter of out military complex and the White House (the last target) is our political leadership.
They weren't trying for the maximum casualties. They wanted the maximum effect.
Why did he/they do it? They hate America and everything we stand for because of our military bases in Saudi Arabia (Arab sacred soil) and our protection of Israel.

Bin Laden was upset that during the First Gulf war there were American troops stationed in his holy land in Saudi. He considered it a sacrilege and that is why the Jihad started against us. And which would be easier, attacking an unarmed populace on the planes and crashing them into buildings where it would create mass panic and death, or attacking heavily guarded and armed facilities with no guarantee of success. We don't have that many nuclear plants and most of them are far enough away from large populations to not pose any great hazard.

They have made it clear they're at war with the west because of our values and the images we send around the world. Immoral society girls and starlets like Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan and Brittany Spears make Islamic terrorist believe that they represent western values. That gay pride is the foundation of western society. The money is a goal unto itself and anything goes to make money. The way they see it, if this is Christianity no wonder Allah wants us to kill them if they don't convert to Islam.

It goes way back when he was a student in Paris he enjoyed the life as a rich student, the booze, the girls, went to MacDonald's and he was addicted to burgers When he found out there was PORK in what he thought was BEEF Burgers he swore untiring revenge against the USA for contaminating his pure Muslim temple of a body.

Bin Laden, like much of the Middle East, was ticked that the US had put a military base in Saudi Arabia, "soiling" their holy land with our non-believer presence and our female soldiers.

He hit the Twin Towers because they represented American capitalism, AND because they held a lot more people than would a monument, even one as precious as the Statue of Liberty.
