i just recently got a micro-teacup chihuahua puppy, and she is definatley a handful!

older dogs are easy to take care of if you have them potty trained, all you have to do it feed them, let them outside, love on them a bit, and play fetch or something or buy them a lot of toys.

but puppies are a handful! you have to potty train them yourself and supervise everything they do. =/ blah.

Dogs require a lot of care - more than just throwing some food in a bowl once a day. At first they need constant supervison so you can get them outside when they need to go potty. This takes two - four, maybe even five months.

For their whole life they need to be played with, they need love, they're very social animals and they need to be around people the majority of the time. It's not that it's hard to take care of them but it's time consuming.

It's a lot more work than you'd think- you have to be committed to taking it out every day and you have to schedule your life around its bathroom needs. I have a dog and I live in an apartment, so I have to walk her every morning then rush home after work to walk her again. I can't ever do things right after work like go shopping or get a drink with friends b/c I have to put my dog out. Even if you have a yard, you shouldn't get a dog if you're not going to commit to walking it every day.
Also it's really expensive. Aside from food, which runs about $50 a month, I wind up spending about $400 a year on vet bills. Every year I've had her (5 years now) something random has come up that has necessitated a costly vet visit (like getting sick). Since pets don't have insurance, you have to pay it all out of pocket. One night under observation at the vet's office runs at least $200. You think these are just one-time things, but they seem to keep happening! (Just like with kids.)
Also a dog can live for 15 years or more, so if you ever want to travel, you should think about that too. Boarding a pet gets very expensive.
It's not fair to get a dog and then ditch it a few years later because you're tired of the responsibility, so be sure you're serious about it if you get one!
All that said, I love my dog and I couldn't imagine my life without her. If you do decide to get one, get it from a shelter please please please, not from a pet store! Those dogs come from puppy mills, which are evil and should not be supported with your $$. There are so many dogs that need homes in shelters right now.

I have a 7 year old Shih Tsu and a 5 month old German Shepherd. The little dog was always easy. The other one is a lot of work. A lot. I recommend crate training.

It takes a lot of time and money if you take care of it correctly.
You buy the food, take for walks, have it groomed, take it to the vet for check ups and when it is sick and you love it as much as you can, and you will have a best friend for its entire life.(And you can't leave it alone past 3 or 4 hours at a time, because you have to take it outside to "tinkle") So, it is a lot of responsibility.

IF the dog is a puppy, training can be difficult or it may be easy. Like with kids you have to play it by ear.Be patient. Be consistant. never loose your temper. An older dog might just need time to get used to you.

6 dogs: Baloo, (Don ) Diego (de Las Vegas), Crevette, Cantona, Lucien and Bambi.
Well, it's not hard to take care of a dog, even a new one. You just have to "tell" him where are the limits.
If he acts bad for example, don't hit him. Put him alone in the bathroom for example during 15 minutes. He will understand like that but never hit him whatever he does.
