It might be cheapest to buy a few canvasboards, a sample oil paint kit & a few brushes. Watch some of the Bob Ross shows to get a good feel for what he does, then try following along. Don't be discouraged if it's not perfect right away, as you'll need to practice the techniques to get them right.

Do you have a Michael's store nearby? Michael's sends out a 40% off coupon every other week or so alongwith your sunday newspaper. Use this coupon and buy a starter kit. You can always add additional brushes or paint as you learn more. I know they have a couple of kits within $100. With teh 40% off it is not a lot of commitment.

Watch for Bob Ross paintings in your TV guide and watch it. You can also record it using the DVR or something similiar so you can watch it multiple times. You may also find Bob Ross videos available in the local library.

As the other person said, Michael's also offers the Bob Ross classes. The advantage of the class is that you get to watch the instructor and learn the techniques. I have taken one of those classes and found them immensely useful in working out the mountains. I found doing the mountains takes a lot of practice. The sky and the trees were relatively easy. However, the price paid for the materials in Michaels class is only for use of the materials in class.

Happy Painting!

Bob Ross is great! I loved watching him painting the "happy trees"! It depends on what's in the kit. If it's just a couple of DVDs or something then no, that's pretty expensive. If it's got a canvas and paints and brushes along with detailed instructions then yes. Actually, where are you getting it? I might want to get one too!

Do you have a hobby lobby or michaels store close by? We have both in our area and they offer classes in bob ross painting. the instructors fee is $45 and for $15 more they will supply everything but the canvas. the classes are fun fun fun. I just did one this past saturday and I did one about 3 years ago. I don't go oftern, but I really enjoy them when I do. I guess the kit would depend on how good you are with written directions. I don't know how good I would do with it, but maybe with a dvd, I might be ok.

In the grand scheme of things, $150.00 is not a lot of money. And if this is the start of a hobby that you will enjoy for a lifetime, the money will have been well spent. I think it is worth the risk. And if you don't learn well from kits and do better in class settings, then take the classes also. Think of it as an investment in your own happiness. Not all investments grow but when you have one that does, it more than makes up for all of the duds.

If a man can paint a picture in an hour from a blank canvas, the value of learning Bob Ross' techniques are priceless.

If you learn such techniques, those techniques will last you a lifetime.

To be honest it cost to paint, I mean really paint. $150.00 is really cheap, and remember it's a kit which means you will come out ahead if you had to purchase those items seperately. In some cases you may pay $150.00 just for the brushes. If you can get brushes and paint for just $150.00 it's a good deal.

Just remember to upkeep your brushes and they will last for years. As afr as taking his classes whatever you can adapt to or feel comfortably with using.
