Repentance... honest statement to God that you are fully commited to abandoning all of the sinfull ways of your past life and want, with all of your heart, to follow the ways God has set forth for you to follow.( you must mean this with all of your heart...knowing that God knows the truth of your heart)
Belief.... Accept The Word and Will of God for your life... and that The Word is The Way and The Way is Jesus The Christ.... this requires that you know Who Jesus The Christ is and accept him as the soul controling force in your life.
All who come to God in The Way will receive His free gift of Salvation. those become part of The Body of The Church of which Jesus The Christ is The Head. Those are the ones of The True Christian Faith. Only Those of The Church will enter Heaven.

The kingdom of God is at hand. Jesus announced the coming of a new dispensation. The King had already come, but the kingdom in its organization and administration was as yet only "at hand". Until the crucifixion of Christ and the descent of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost the kingdom could not be fully organized, for the blood shed upon the cross furnished the means for purification which precedes a proper entrance into the kingdom, and the coming of the Holy Spirit afforded that indwelling strength by which those entering are enabled to abide therein.
Repent ye, and believe in the gospel. That is, prepare for the kingdom by repenting of sin, and by believing the glad news that the kingdom was approaching, for the King had come

Mar 1:15 and saying, "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel."
He was saying all the prophecies about the New Covenant are coming into play concerning the suffering servant, namely Isaiah 53 and Jeremiah 31 where He begins forgiving sins to the repentant believer because of His obedience to the cross for our salvation.

Wow... you have some great answers to consider!
How 'bout I use my two points to add to the existing studies by simply providing some Greek translations to consider:
Mark was a Gospel meant to witness to the Romans - to "men of action." It is a very direct book.
Mark 1:15 He (Jesus) said, "The time has come! God's kingdom will soon be here. Turn back to God and believe the good news!"
G2540
καιρός
kairos
kahee-ros'

G4137

play-ro'-o

G3340
μετανοέω

If you want to be a Christian you have to "repent" (stop) from doing bad things (sinning). And the "believe" means to believe in all Jesus came down and taught us and all God taught before that. Jesus said for us to become Christians we must stop sinning. If a person thinks he/she can sin all they want, then just confess after wards; they are not Christians.

Repentance is to have remorse for sins you've committed and a pledge to turn away from those sins. We are to believe Jesus is the Son of God and that He brings good news about salvation. But remember, you can't pull one verse out of the entire Bible and think you know all that's necessary to receive salvation.

He was calling us to repent and believe in Him-- to turn from our sin and follow Him. Because the time is NOW, and after this life it will be too late.
He wants us to stop sinning! And we can only do this with His help-- for He also says "Apart from Me you can do nothing"
So when we believe in Him, and confess, we are saved--- we must repent of sin and follow Him. Repentence is very important. The seriousness of sin must be explained to every unbeliever-- or else they will never understand why they need Jesus!
