I was worried about having low iron or protein so I have been taking 2 multli-vitamin Flintstone's vitamins, 2 chocolate Calcium vitamins, and a Joint Juice can everyday. (contains Glucosamine)

Anyways, I was reading on a few doctors "what to do before surgery" and it said to avoid taking vitamins up to a month before the surgery because they can thin your blood! Should I stop?

I want to be really healthy before going in there, but I don't want to bleed all over the place either. Anyone know? I don't see my doctor for three more weeks and that is for the one week pre-op.

Well, let me just say that "having the lord on your side" may very well help you out, but that doesn't mean that you can do whatever you want and not follow your doctors' orders. Some herbal supplements can impact the coagulation cascade (blood clotting) and you should call your surgeon soon so he can advise you. Furthermore, answer all your anesthesiologists questions honestly as well on the morning of surgery. There are lots of things we need to know, for reasons that your probably don't know, so just be open and honest with your docs and you'll do just fine.

Multivitamins are fine. Calcium is fine. Just take them as directed on the bottle. More is not necessarily better!

I don't know anything about "Joint Juice", but I'd recommend stopping it 2 weeks prior to surgery, in case it contains anything that might impair coagulation.

We worry more about herbal supplements because there are a bunch of those that can thin your blood, and they are unregulated, so you never really know if what's on the label is really what's in the bottle. (Studies have shown that contents and amounts vary widely from they say they contain.) So, no herbal supplements for 2 weeks prior to surgery.

You want to stay away from aspirin, ibuprofen and similar drugs for a week before surgery.

The best things you can do to cruise through surgery are: don't smoke, eat a healthy diet, and follow your surgeon's instructions.

Good luck with your surgery!

Call the dr's office, ask to speak to the nurse.

You do not want to take aspirin a week before surgery. it is a blood thinner, and can lead to extra bleeding.

Call the nurse, please. We don't want you to get all worried.
