I just broke my Sony cybershot camera on vacation and I've realized I need a camera that can take a beating; I think everyone does because who wants to baby a camera when there's a party happening or you're out snowboarding, wake-boarding, hiking, etc...? I know Olympus makes one that's shock-proof and water proof which is pretty cool but it costs $500 (canada) but I'm looking for something cheaper (less than $300)

Unfortunately, the adage "You get what you pay for." applies to shock and water proofing feature too. I would advise saving the money....

I've found something that has save my digital camera from being smashed a few times. I purchased a case that was over sized, and padded the camera inside with wadded up plastic grocery bags. It saved the camera from drenching rains too... However, if you want to take photos while actually doing the process of snowboarding, etc., all bets are off.

Save your money for the Olympus.

Your other option is to find a good used DSLR and before buying it check to see if what's offered by cameraarmor.com and bonicadive.com will fit it. Then you can order one of their protective covers.

I don't believe in shock-proof anything when it comes to electronics. You gots to baby them things.
