I would like to formalise my choice in Godparents but I understand that a dedication is more my promise as opposed to a christening where the Godparents make the promises..

Is that right? Can you still have Godparents with a dedication?

Some churches who Christen children take the view that such a service infers some spiritual value to the child but the Bible does not give us this service nor tell us that any service can confer any spiritual change. Some Churches who follow the bible and don't do christening do dedications which is a simple service of thanksgiving where the parents promise to bring the children up in accordance with biblical principles.

Dedication services are not in the bible either but at least the church does not pretend some spiritual change takes place. People can only come Christians when they of an age to understand the bible and are enabled to seek the Lord Jesus Christ in repentance and faith.

There are several reasons. Might be that they want the child to be able to choose to be baptised as an adult. Might also be because of the seriousness of the promises parents and godparents make in infant baptism/christening and that for many if they are not chuchgoers they would find it difficult to make the promises truthfully

At baby dedications in our church the parents commit to raising the child to love and serve the Lord and the congregation vows to support them in doing so.

What role do you see the Godparents as having?

When a church does not practice infant baptism, there may be an alternative such as a dedication. My church does not baptize children under eight. Infants are given a name and a blessing.

Churches that practice syncretism (paganism mixed with Christianity), do not obey the Word of God. So to answer your question......It doesn't really matter what kind of "man made tradition" you use because God does not reckognize or acknowledge it as anything at all except complete and utter spiritual blindness brought on by the influence of Satan, who is the "the prince of the power of the air" and "god of this age".
