If god made a man from nothing then why would he need to take one of his ribs to make a woman?

I order to understand things like that, you need to look in the actual context in which it was told, in Genesis : 2 21 -24, which says ( in the NIV translation) " So the Lord caused the man (Adam ) to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man's ribs and closed the wound with flesh.(22) Then the Lord God made a woman from the the rib he had taken out of the man, and brought her to the man.
(23) The man said, This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called woMAN , for she was taken out of MAN. (24) For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they shall become ONE flesh." This whole thing symbolizes how a man and woman unite in marriage to become one, in God's eyes.

God did not create women from Adam's side. He created one woman - Eve - the mother of all living.
The reason God created Eve from Adam, and not from the dust like Adam, relates to the mystery of marriage. Man and wife are united as one in a unique way due to their creation from one.
You wil find the answer in Genesis 2:
21 So the LORD God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man's ribs and closed up the place with flesh. 22 Then the LORD God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man.

I hate to say that you may be the naive one here. Have you not heard of stem cells or cloning? Where a beast can be cloned from a chip of a rib.

yet it's interesting that women have one more set of ribs than man eh?
Also interesting that snakes have leg hole sockets and no legs when bible says God made them crawl on the ground-taking away their legs.
Also interesting that we have more Vit K in our blood that helps clotting on the 8th day of life than any other day (learned this in Anatomy class). And boys were circumcised on the 8th day.
