I have a permanent resident card (alien card) It was issued to me 2 years ago. Its about to expire in 22 days. I found out that I need to do this Form I-751 which costs $545!!!! What in the world??? I thought by paying all my fees from before, I wouldn't have to pay another fee! Its OUTRAGEOUS! Could someone explain to me why its too EXPENSIVE?? Or is there another way to bypass this form and NOT pay for anything

the fees just rose this july 2007. it was around $200 to do the application. you need to file asap because if you file after it expires you are liable to be deported. your green card will be renewed for 10 years.

The INS just raised all of there fees to try and update their system. Most of the work they still do is not even electronic. This causes delays and backlogs. INS doesn't get money from the government so all of their income comes from those fees.

Even though they are going to raise a lot more income by doubling fees, it's expected to only increase production by 20%.

You have a Conditional Green Card. After two years you need to file the I-751 to remove the conditional status. You must file BEFORE the Green Card expires. You will be out of status if you don't.

The fees are based on the actual cost to process the request. US law does not allow taxpayer money to be used to subsidize the immigration system.

It is because by law the immigration approvals have to be self supporting and have to pay for the more careful background checks, etc. They needed to hire more people to do background checks for people 'kicked out' by the immediate computer run, and to put the costs on just those kicked out would have been prohibatively expensive for those few - many of whom are kicked out because the poverty of the countries they come from means they don't have centralized data bases and need humans to track down information.

The costs of everything just went up at the end of July, unfortunately.

Nope, if you want to go through the proper timelines and become a citizen, you have to pay it. Otherwise, you'll become an "Illegal Alien". The government has found a way to get more money, its from immigrants. But, best you can do is meet timeline requirements and become a citizen. If your remain on an immigrant card, they will soak you for money forever.

A permanent residence card is good for ten years, so what do you have?

sorry. you have to pay the fees. its the law. you have to re-apply, and re-pay, all fees every time the card expires.
they have been raising the price slowly, but last year, they really jacked it up! my suggestion is applying for citizenship, to save the hassle of ever doing this again, but keep in mind that they raised the price of this also.
i had to re-apply three times over three years when i moved to nevada from california, and it wasn't fun cuz i had to pay each time cuz they wouldn't approve me, even though i have been in the u.s. for 30 years already.
apply for citizenship, you'll be happier for it.

Until you become an US Citizen every time you renew your permanent resident card (green card) you have to pay.
