would really appreciate it if someone else who has been through this can let me know what to expect. Today I took my 14 month old to the doctor for 4 shots. She typically holds her breath a bit when crying but in between the two shots she turned completely blue, her eyes rolled up into her head, and she completely stopped breathing. It lasted for about a minute and then she looked like she had a siezure and woke back up screaming. It was the scariest thing I have ever seen, I literally thought that she had a reaction to the vaccine and had died right in front of me. The doctor said that now that she has started doing it, it will probably get worse as she gets into her twos and I should expect that as soon as I say no or take something away that she could just collapse. My question is what can I expect and is it possible that there is more to it? My brother, mother, and aunt all had epilepsy growing up and I called the doc back and left a voicemail but until then any thoughts?

In between waking back up and crying she opened her eyes but was non responsive when I called her name. I know when my brother had seizures this also happened. I was so scared I completely blanked on a million questions I had for the doc so until he calls back any comments would help.

It may be a form of seizure disorder, they will probably do an EEG to determine if they can capture any abnormal brain electrical activity. These test do not always capture the event however. Some people are placed on a 72 hr video and EEG monitoring in the hospital to try to capture the event if the EEG is negative.

Not having all the information, it would be possibly suspicious for temporal lobe seizures. These can be treated with several forms of therapy, including a possible special diet. Have your child worked up by a pediatric neurologist, or an epileptologist. If she had seizure type activity, followed by a confusional period (called a post ictal period) she may have had a seizure. One in 10 people will have a single seizure in their lives without having another. Those who develop a form of epilepsy (any one who has 2 seizures with or without confirming diagnostic) 80% are well controlled with medications, if well controlled it should not have a great effect on her living normally on medications. It may help you get your questions in line before talking to her physician.

problem 1; you took your 14 month old to the doctor for shots. what exactly does a 14 month old need shots for?

if you have a family history of epilepsy it could be a possibility as well. I'd suggest finding another doctor who can give you more info than it will happen again. could be she's already having panic attacks from the shots and pain she's going through? dunno.

good luck with that.

GET A SECOND OPINION NOW!!!!!!!!! I wouldn't care what that doctor said that sounds like far more then a tantrum esp. since she's so young. If it turns out that nothing is wrong you will at least know you did everything in your power to be your daughter's advocate. Don't wait. Early intervention to whatever caused this is the best line of defense. Hope all works out for you both. Good Luck. Hugs Kuka

While this is seizure activity or not can not be determined by one doctor. Have more opinions.
Of course, since family members have epilepsy, it might prove to be inherited, but that can only be determined after much testing.
