Sorry, but if my death could save a loved one, then I would die. I would risk my own life to save someone else. It's called love.

One of the great paradoxes in life, is that every element of the good life depends on pure and often sacrificial giving, on losing one's self.
Have you read the book "To End All Wars", by Ernest Gordon... about what happened in the Japanese POW camps along the Kwai (Chungkai Prison? Gordon's reflection on the human condition and the supreme virtue of self-sacrifice in the footsteps of Jesus Christ is poignantly and profoundly written. With tour de force, the epilogue is a penetrating piece of criticism on the 'civilized' society the author returned to after the war. The reverse culture shock he experienced is a haunting reminder of how that still small voice can be so easily drowned out in the cacophony of modern society.
Sacrificing ourselves for others gets us only part of the way. The most important question is whether WHAT we sacrifice for...is the truth.

I think they have a heightened sense of empathy and a strong moral compass about doing the right thing.
That said, I think they probably think or hope they will not die.
Ex. a stranger pushes someone from in front of a bus, saving the strangers life but the bus hits and kills him.
I think he thought he had time to push the stranger out of harms way as well as get out of the way himself..
I doubt the split second decision was to consciously end his own life for that of a stranger.
An exception would be a someone who saves a loved ones life but loses their own.
Almost any parent would lose their life to save their child.

There is a passage in the Bible, that says, there is no greater love, than a man who would lay down his life for a friend...We have military people right now doing that..for a stranger,..Wars are man made, and satan..and not of God, but the Lord says to render unto Ceasars what is Ceasars...although, if everyone was a conciensous objecter, we would have no military at all and then where would we be? At least, until Jesus is ruling again

depends on the circumstances.
if they risk thier lives and they ended up dying to save that person then they are very heroic.
if they save someone knowing they will die, and that person is a stranger then while it is still a noble deed and very heroic, there is something wrong with the person who died.
If that person died, knew they were going to die, and saved a loved one, then that is like the first scenario and very commendable and heroic (it was done out of love).
I don't believe people "choose" death- more likely they risk thier own life to save someone else's that is a commendable and heroic act.

With God's guidance, persecution in the name of Jesus Christ/Father Almighty, rejection from peers and family, you might call it matrydom. It would be an honor.
If it's just a person who dies will trying to literally save someone - ie:drowning, car accident, fall - I'm sure it would be all good on Judgement Day.
If it's an act of "false doctrine" ie: suicuide bombers - I would call them misguided and in need of serious prayer. They're judgements on Judgement Day, I wouldn't want to have to endure.

I can only pray to god that this will be the way that I go out. That would be the ultimate gift that I could give my creator. I admire, and also envy the people who have died that way.The bible says that there is no better gift, then to lay down your life for a friend.

It is Biblicial, No greater gift can one give his brother than to give his life... (Paraphrase) However, this alone does not earn heaven.

I would lay my life down for one of my fellow comrades. They would do the same for me.
