Hi everyone,
I have just bought a beautiful 1930's white bungalow, it is really full of character and I want to keep it that way. My question is: Does anyone have any ideas on a colour scheme for the living room so that it blends in with the style of the house ? I am really stuck, it is a light cream colour at the moment, but I would like to put " my mark" on it . Any ideas ? I'm not keen on art deco so any advice will be fully appreciated. Thank you in advance for your help .

By " my mark" I mean I want to make it unique. I have looked at lots of magazines, I have checked on the web but nothing " stands out" to me .
Thanks to everyone that has answered, I really appreciate it .

Light cream is a good colour in any room. It's neutral and any furniture you buy should go well in the room. Try to avoid harsh colours. It can be tempting to "put your mark" into a house and harsh colours can sometimes seem to "warm up a room", but stick to subtle colours. If you want to add a little colour to the walls, try pastel shades. Nice and subtle!

Best of luck!

If you're going for a "cottage style," then I would recommend something light & airy, like Sherwin Williams' "aqueduct." But if you're leaning more towards Arts & Crafts/Frank Lloyd Wright style, the I would go for a more muted tone, like "Sands of Time" or "Superior Bronze."

Try checking out some magazines, like "Country Living," "Cottage Living," and "American Bungalow" for some ideas.

Check with your grandmother or other packrat for magazines from the era ... or check an online auction like *-bay for old periodicals. There will be a few color photos and lots of verbiage to describe the interior decorating articles, along with descriptive color names to help you choose authentic period styles. With one or two retro pieces (armchair, breakfast table & chairs; lamps) you should be able to bring in your current favorites and retain the charm of the past.

I would suggest painting one accent wall in sea-foam green. Simple, minimalistic, and easy to fix if you don't like it.
