don't just go straight to games like vtech or leap frog.. how did you learn to read? everybody wants to skip to these games so they don't have to spend the time with their kids.. spend time with your son.. encourage him to read more.. make frequent trips to the local library, let him pick out a book that he likes and then get yourself a book to read and spend a certain amount of time, say a half hour, to where you both sit down and read.. kids think it's really cool when it's a special time but after a week or so, the vtech or leap frog is going to be pushed in the corner because he's going to get bored.. call the special reading time that you both spend together and it'll mean even more..
My 11 year old brother Levi was having troubles reading at the level he was supposed to be, so my mom, me, Levi, and my twin 7 year old brothers all made trips to the library and had contests on who could read a book faster.. The twins got really good at reading and whenever we'd go somewhere, Levi would read on the way..
All in all, you just have to make it fun and don't make it seem like he's stupid or he's alone.. that's why it's a good idea to read with him...

The site below is a really nice site for learning English. It includes learning letters and sounds, and reading and listening to various levels of stories. Kids can use this site independently to learn and have fun at the same time.
I hope this will be helpful.

My son had a bit of difficulty reading when he was a bit younger... now LOVES to read...
Get a Nintendo DS, and games like Pokemon Diamond, Yu-gi-oh, or especially Nintendogs... there is a TON of reading involved in those games so you can get to the next levels etc. Brainage for DS apparently is good too.

My son is the same age, same problem and enjoys playing the DS. He has picked up repetitive words but likes the interaction with the touch screen. Depending on the game he will rarely ask for help and its fun to play, kid or adult.

V-smile or Leapfrog. Their just like video games -except they are more for learning. Also, you can talk with a specialist and see what they suggest. Good Luck...

V-smile may be good for him. He may be a little bit old for a few of the games but they are good for learning.
