It's because had some experience that led them to believing in one part, and then fell into the notion that the rest of the book must be true too. Of course pointing things like this out only makes them more defensive and cling to the stories tighter.

Well some of them are. More are victims of very sophisticated propaganda techniques practiced by the fundamentalists, including TV, radio, direct mail, movies, outreach programs, pamphlets left on bus benches, large newspaper advertisements, billboards, "free" handouts, etc., etc., etc.

Probably not. They are probably on average, as intelligent as you are. It is just their way of dealing with unanswerable questions. You have ways of coping with unresolved and unresolvable mysteries, don't you?
