Two reasons. The gold-diggers ask so they have an idea of how much money you have. The rest of us ask just because it's an interesting way to start a conversation. There's SOMETHING interesting to talk about in almost any job.

Women usually ask what you do because they have an interest in you and the things you do with your time. Some things that men find as normal everyday things aren't to women. Also most men do not just tell a woman what he has done with his time and so the only way to find out is ask.

Because it's important to us. We need to know about the person who we are interested in. Personally speaking I need to know that the man I'm going to date or be committed to is stable. I don't care how much money he makes, just that he makes money at a real job. If he is 30 and working at Burger king, living with his mom and doesn't have a car, then I know that he is not dependable. Why would a 30 year old work there? I never ask how a man how much he makes, just what they do. Dating can turn to marriage and if we can't work together to provide, then there is no point.

How can a person date someone and not know what they do for a living? It just seems weird, don't you think? You've never asked a woman what she did for a living (in otherwords, what does she do all day, everyday)? I don't think you're bothered by women asking what you do for a living; it's what you do for a living (or don't do) that you're ashamed of. You don't want people to ask because you don't want people to know. And that is the answer. When I didn't have a job, I didn't like for men (potential dates, for example) to ask me either.

Girls are inherently curious. I like to inquire because it gives me insight to what type of person he could be. I'm not saying that a person's profession will define a person to a T but it certainly helps. It helps to understand where the person has been in their life, education, training, sometimes traveling, etc. I don't ask to find out how much money the guy makes. I don't really care.

A persons job can tell a lot about them and their personality. Some jobs require a lot of hours, hard work and others do not. Some require a lot of passion, some require your whole life to be involved!
Someone with no job, no ambition - what does that say? A steady job with good pay shows he can be depended on etc.

Take care!

It is just Standard Operating Procedure.

Ever watch Wheel of Fortune, Family Feud, Jeopardy, Millionaire or any game show?

It is the first question asked after the person's name is asked. I personnally find it annoying because it is so habitual.

Two reasons - easy conversation starter and a person's occupation tells you a lot (level of education, work ethic, etc.) By the way, I am a woman and get asked that question quite frequently by men (see the first reason.)

They want to know if you have goals and ambitions, cause if you don't, they are wasting time by talking to you!

Of course some just may be trying to make conversation and getting to know you.

It could be either.

No you are wrong!

They don;t ask! They talk about problems, about their day... We man, start giving the answers. They just want to say what happened...
