Also, what else can I use wine barrels for? I'm going to make a table.

You may not be able to get them free but if you call around the vineyards they usually have some for sale. I have seen chairs, benches and even shower stalls made from barrels it was quite the popular craft in the 70's - you may be able to find a book on Barrels and using them for decoration at the library. Good Luck!

Hi there - I agree with some of the posters above, you might have a hard time finding them for free.

I would first check craigslist - here is a link to a quick search I did for "wine barrels." http://sfbay.craigslist.org/search/sss?query=wine%20barrels

You might refine the search for your area, or try just "barrels" or "oak barrels." Check the "free stuff" category as well.

If that doesn't turn up anything you're interested in, there is a whole section dedicated to selling used barrels on winebusiness.com (http://www.winebusiness.com/UsedBarrels/?ref=rn). The older barrels will be the cheapest.

Halved wine barrels are great planters. They hold a good amount of dirt and can be used as veggie garden containers, or to plant just about anything.

Good luck!

Go to any local wine makers. Usually they reuse them or sell them to manufactures. There are beers out there that are stored in old wine barrels for a several months and the beer takes on flavor notes form it.

Home Depot sells them occasionally in garden dept. Check with Napa/Sonoma wineries. They can probably turn you on to sources.

I would check out all vineyards to see if they have any lying around that aren't being used anymore, also old farms or homesteads..
